Neurobiologists Show How the Brain Processes Signals from Pheromones April 15, 1999 News from The Rockefeller University, NY Researchers at The Rockefeller University have shown for the first time in mice how the brain processes signals from pheromones, essential chemicals used by animals to communicate with each other. Reported in the April 16 issue of "Cell," the findings provide the first look at the "wiring diagram" of the accessory olfactory system and show that it differs dramatically from the wiring diagram for the main olfactory system, which all mammals, including humans, use to detect smells. "We have elucidated for the first time the wiring diagram of the accessory olfactory system in mammals, and we have shown that is more complex than the main olfactory system," says senior author Peter Mombaerts, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor and head of the Laboratory of Vertebrate Developmental Neurogenetics at Rockefeller. "We think that the complex wiring of the accessory olfactory system reflects the need for the brain to recognize blends of molecules, rather than the individual odorant molecules recognized by the main olfactory system." Scientists think the accessory olfactory system, also known as the vomeronasal system, is involved in animal communication. Neurons located in a structure called the vomeronasal organ project their axons to a specialized part of the olfactory bulb -- the accessory olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb is the first relay station of the olfactory system, where information is collected, integrated and processed. When the vomeronasal organ is removed from animals, they undergo profound changes in mating behavior and aggression. In the "Cell" paper, Ivan Rodriguez, Ph.D., and Paul Feinstein, Ph.D., along with Mombaerts used genetic manipulation techniques to determine the wiring diagram of the accessory olfactory system and found pronounced differences from the diagram of the main olfactory system. First, the researchers found that all the neurons that express the same pheromone receptor project their axons to multiple targets in the accessory olfactory bulb, called glomeruli. There are about 15 glomeruli in all, compared to only two in the main olfactory bulb. Second, the positions of the glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb are variable, whereas in the main olfactory bulb the positions are fixed. "One could argue that the variable positions of the glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb may be accounted for by differences among the mice: they are all genetically slightly different," says Mombaerts. "But this variability is also clear between the two accessory olfactory bulbs of the same animal: the left- and the right-hand sides are not symmetrical." The researchers showed that when the pheromone receptor gene is knocked out, the projection pattern is very different. "The neurons seem to go all over the place, suggesting that the receptor need to be expressed to make proper connections," explains Mombaerts. Mombaerts says that "as an encore," they replaced by genetic manipulation the pheromone receptor with an odorant receptor from the main olfactory system. The researchers found that even with an odorant receptor, the neurons projected their axons to another set of numerous glomeruli, in a complex and variable pattern. "These last two experiments suggest that the pheromone receptor is involved in setting up the wiring diagram, and strangely enough, its function can be substituted by a molecule whose function is totally unrelated," says Mombaerts. The Department of Veterans Affairs says in a new report the accidents and deaths occurred from June 1997 to December 1998, in the first 19 months of a new policy that requires employees to report medical errors and ``adverse events.'' The problems include medication errors, like prescribing or dispensing the wrong drugs, the failure of medical devices, abuse of patients, errors in blood transfusions and surgery on the wrong body part or the wrong patient, the Times reported Sunday. The comprehensive self-examination by the department is believed to be the first of its kind by any health care system in the nation and shows what could be expected if all hospitals had to report their errors, as recommended recently by the National Academy of Sciences, the Times said. The Institute of Medicine, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, said last month that medical errors killed 44,000 to 98,000 people a year in hospitals alone. The modern followers of the Greek gods are ready for another showdown. This time it's against a force that could make even Zeus quiver: the hype and pageantry of welcoming the millennium. A small but passionate group of devotees to the 12 Olympian gods claim it's sacrilegious to mix the ancient temples with celebrations marking 2,000 years of Christianity, and have threatened to take the Culture Ministry to court if it allows Christian hymns to be sung inside the Parthenon on New Year's Eve. ``The Parthenon, temple to Athena, is a sacred place of Greek religion,'' said Nikolaos Tziotis, secretary of the Committee for the Recognition of the Greek Religion of the 12 Gods. ``It is the greatest blasphemy for songs of another religion to be heard there and we will not allow it.'' Tziotis and others also have denounced plans for a light show that will include beams radiating from the 2,500-year-old Parthenon. ``It wants to turn the sacred temple of Athena into a Christmas tree,'' said screenwriter Manolis Tsamis, who drafted a protest letter. The Culture Ministry says it is aware of the objections, but does not plan to cancel or significantly alter the extravaganza. It did, however, shift plans for a Byzantine choir from outside the Parthenon to the entrance to the Acropolis. ``The decision satisfies us,'' Panaghiotis Marinis, president of the Greek Society of the Friends of the Ancients, said Friday. Christianity took hold in Greece in the 4th century after Roman Emperor Constantine's conversion. Emperor Theodosius wiped out the last vestige of the Olympian gods when he abolished the Olympic Games in 394. The revival of the Olympiad maintains a thin - albeit commercialized - link to ancient ceremonies. A core of about 1,000 people in Greece try to maintain a spiritual connection with the ancients. Modern followers say they seek to build a general outlook drawn from Greek philosophers and a love of nature. ``We don't walk down the street in togas,'' said Tsamis. ``We gather in philosophical companies and associations.'' But the powerful Greek Orthodox Christian Church dismisses them as a ``New Age'' clan. The government has put on hold their application to become an officially recognized religion because they don't have a formal place of worship. He said his party would scrap the constitution's ``stupid clause'' that guarantees compensation to landowners. Mugabe's new position is likely to estrange his government further from international investors, Western donor nations and financial institutions supporting market-led reforms in the ailing economy of this southern African country. Mugabe told delegates of his Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front that Zimbabwe's 12.5 million blacks could not achieve economic goals as long as the 60,000-strong white community controlled large tracts of land and dominated the nation's industry and commerce. Under the plan, landless blacks would be settled on the seized farms ``Without land, there is neither economic development nor empowerment,'' he said. He justified his move by saying that British settlers ``seized our land from us, our ancestors, and no compensation was paid. It was taken for nothing.'' About 4,000 white farmers, mostly the descendants of British settlers, own about a third of the country's productive land. Known as Rhodesia, Zimbabwe was a British colony before independence in 1980. Since 1980, the state has bought more than 2,000 white farms for resettlement, but the program has been plagued by mismanagement and corruption. Only about 70,000 black families have been resettled, less than half the target of 160,000 families. Until 1992, the bill of rights in the constitution allowed for land acquisition only under ``willing seller-willing buyer'' deals. But the ruling party subsequently passed laws that permitted the government to seize farms but pay compensation related to the properties' market value. The constitutional clause that guarantees compensation for appropriated land could be scrapped in a revised national constitution that is to be put to a referendum next year ahead of parliamentary elections. Opposition groups accuse Mugabe of using land seizures as a ploy to distract attention from worsening economic hardships. Last year, soaring prices blamed on economic mismanagement triggered food riots that forced Mugabe deploy troops to quell civil unrest for the first time since independence. Labor unrest and a series of strikes continued in 1999 as inflation spiraled to a record 70 percent. With hundreds of businesses shutting down, unemployment reached 50 percent. Scientists Release Earthquake Map By MATTHEW FORDAHL SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Much of the world's population lives on potentially shaky ground, scientists said after releasing the first map detailing the entire planet's earthquake hazard zones. The ominously colorful document offers few surprises: Southern California, southeastern Hawaii, Turkey, Taiwan, Iceland and the India-China border are most likely to experience strong shaking in the future. ``Active tectonics make outstanding scenery and people want to live there,'' said Kaye Shedlock of the U.S. Geological Survey. ``You just have to recognize what your hazards are.'' The map, developed by 500 scientists over seven years, offers developing countries new information that can be used to update or establish building codes. Some nations in Africa, for example, never compiled such data. ``We can say today that as a result of this program, more than half the countries of the world have a new generation of seismic hazard maps,'' said Domenico Giardini of the Swiss Seismological Service in Zurich. As much as 15 percent of the planet's land is in zones of high or very high hazard, which is defined as a 10 percent chance or greater of violent shaking within the next 50 years, Shedlock said. Roughly 40 percent of the Earth's land is considered low hazard. Specifically, the map attempts to predict the probability of peak ground acceleration, a force that is most likely to damage low-rise residential buildings. Future maps are being compiled that will detail hazard areas for larger structures like high-rises. ``This map only provides part of the story,'' Giardini said. ``You can easily live in a high-risk area if you have a well-built house.'' In most cases, the hazardous areas are near faults that define the boundaries of the Earth's tectonic plates. Entire continents and oceans ride on the plates, which grind against, smash into or separate from each other, producing quakes and volcanoes. In California, the San Andreas Fault slices through the state where the Pacific and North American plates meet. Turkey, which has been devastated by several large quakes this year, is at the juncture of the Eurasian, African and Arabian plates. One of the largest red marks is along the India-China border, where India is literally smashing into Asia, producing the still-growing Himalayas, the tallest mountains in the world. Hawaii, however, is a different story. The island in the middle of the Pacific plate is prone to large quakes caused by underground volcano-related collapses. The greatest hazard areas, colored red or brown on the map, contain half the world's largest cities. Efforts are now under way to determine exactly how many people live in the most dangerous areas. It will be up to individual governments to determine how to use the new information. Developments planned in the most hazardous areas should receive the closest scrutiny, the geologists said. ``If we've done our job right, the end result of this is going to be a lot more detailed site-specific hazard maps,'' Shedlock said. The map project was launched in 1992 by the International Lithosphere Program with support from the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. It was unveiled Dec. 14 at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union here. Researchers combined existing hazard maps, data from recent and historical quakes as well as other records that stretch back 2,000 years. Biblical passages were used for parts of the Middle East. The work was easy in the United States, where the law requires hazard maps to be updated every five years. It was much more difficult in less developed countries, Giardini said. Kinkel had been prescribed both Ritalin and Prozac. Although widely used among adults, Prozac has not been approved by the FDA for pediatric use. March 24, 1998: Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, opened fire on their classmates at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Ark. Johnson had been receiving psychiatric counseling and, although information about the psychotropic drugs that may have been prescribed for him has not been made public, his attorney, Val Price, responded when asked about it: "I think that is confidential information, and I don't want to reveal that." A great deal has been written about all of these cases. There have, however, been no indications that all of these children watched the same TV programs or listened to the same music. Nor has it been established that they all used illegal drugs, suffered from alcohol abuse or had common difficulties with their families or peers. They did not share identical home lives, dress alike or participate in similar extracurricular activities. But all of the above were labeled as suffering from a mental illness and were being treated with psychotropic drugs that for years have been known to cause serious adverse effects when given to children. True, many anarchist hold a mix of individualist and syndicalist beliefs, but many do not; consider the following: About this time last year when Michael Johnson and Joshua2 were constantly butting heads on this list, it was hard for me not to sum up MJ as an anarcho-capitalist and J2 as an anarcho-syndicalist. It's sometimes helpful to look at the big picture from this perspective and break it down from there. And while MJ and J2 are both political anarchists (even though they might not use that label to describe their beliefs), and most likely believe that self reliance and mutual aid (or exchange) are of equal importance, they can't agree on anything with regards to economics [although they seem to agree to a similar theory with regards to politics: (poli=many/tics=parasites)]. The major differences between the two major anarchist camps are not political, they're economic. Because of this, the 'we' in anarchism is sometimes better left as 'them' and 'us'. -Caveat Lector- Sunday December 19 8:10 PM ET Indicted Nuclear Scientist Said Suing U.S. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Wen Ho Lee, the former government physicist accused last week of mishandling top secret nuclear weapons data, will sue the government on Monday for wrongfully portraying him as a spy, CNN reported Sunday. CNN said Lee's lawyers planned to file a lawsuit against the U.S. Justice Department, the FBI and the Energy Department, alleging they violated his privacy and characterized him as a spy. Lee, a Taiwan-born American citizen, was indicted and jailed on Dec. 10 on 59 counts of tampering, altering, and concealing classified information about nuclear weapons. He was not charged with espionage, although he was fired in March from the Los Alamos National Laboratory on suspicion of passing nuclear secrets to China. Lee's Los Angeles-based lawyer Mark Holscher was not immediately available to comment on the reported lawsuit. Chinese-American organizations on Tuesday accused U.S. authorities of using Lee as a scapegoat in its feud with China over nuclear weapons secrets, claiming his detention ahead of trial is evidence of racism. Lee, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges, was ordered detained in jail. His lawyers had offered to put up a $100,000 bond and put Lee under electronic surveillance. The Los Angeles Times, in an editorial last week, accused the FBI and Energy Department investigators of ``tunnel vision'' in its pursuit of Lee. It said both organizations were ``now known to have been astonishingly inept, incomplete, and in their premature public identification of Wen Ho Lee as the prime suspect, grossly prejudicial.'' -Caveat Lector- Wandering heart may hold answer to 204-year-old French Royal mystery By CLAR NI CHONGHAILE PARIS (December 18, 1999 1:43 a.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - More than two centuries ago, a young boy, his body ravaged by scabies and sprouting ugly tumors, died in a Paris prison. Some mourned the death of the French king, others said the child was just another common victim of the French Revolution. This lonely death was only the beginning of a tale of intrigue revolving around the mysterious fate of Louis XVII, heir to the throne. Now a French historian hopes a DNA study of the preserved heart of the boy who died in the prison can resolve one of France's most enduring mysteries. Louis XVII's parents, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, were guillotined in 1793 during the French Revolution. He was imprisoned with his teenage sister in the Temple, a fortified monastery in Paris, where he died at age 10 of tuberculosis in 1795. Or did he? Even before Louis XVII's alleged death, rumors were rife that he had been spirited away from the prison and that another child had been substituted in his place. "What interests me above all is the idea of a tragic fate. Also, it is a great historical enigma which raises deep feelings in the collective consciousness," said the historian, Philippe Delorme said. The study organized by Delorme will compare the heart's DNA with that of hair cut from Marie-Antoinette when she was a young girl in Austria. "If we find the same DNA signature in the heart and in the hair of Marie-Antoinette, then we will have resolved the issue," Delorme said. But that is a big "if." Delorme, who in 1995 published a book called "The Affair of Louis XVII", admits one cannot even be sure the heart belongs to the boy who died in the Temple. Overcome by royalist fervor, the doctor who performed the autopsy in 1795 stole the heart and pickled it in alcohol for eight to ten years. One of his student's subsequently stole it, but on his deathbed, he asked his wife to return it. After the restoration of France's monarchy in 1814, the heart was offered to various members of the royal family but they were reluctant to accept a relic of such dubious provenance. It finally found its way to the Spanish branch of the Bourbon family. They returned it to Paris in 1975 and it was placed in the royal crypt. Apart from issues of authenticity, there are also scientific challenges. "We are not certain of getting a result. It is possible that there will be no DNA or that it will have been damaged," Delorme said. This week, draped in purple veil, the crystal vase containing the heart was carried in a stately procession from the royal crypt in Paris' St. Denis basilica and taken to a laboratory where samples were extracted and placed in sealed envelopes under the watchful eye of law officers. Delorme explained that the scientists needed a very sharp knife to cut the heart. "It was really hard, like a stone or a bone." Another historian, Philippe Boiry, was skeptical the heart would resolve the mystery. "This heart has lived through a lot. It has been lost, stolen, found, broken from its reliquary. Also, what can remain in a heart that has been in alcohol for years?" he said. From the time of Louis XVII's alleged death there have been tales that the boy had survived. Some claimed Louis XVII had been drugged with opium and a dead boy substituted for the living one in the coffin. One guard at the time said he had seen many bathtubs being carried out of the prison and when those carrying one stumbled, he heard a child's cry from within, Boiry says in his book on the mystery. Enter the royal wanabees. Some 100 people came forward after the restoration claiming to be Louis XVII, some in less-than-likely locations such as the Seychelles and Canada, Delorme said. One of the most plausible characters, according to Boiry, was Charles-Guillaume Naundorff, who popped up mysteriously in Berlin in 1810 with no birth certificate and no known parents. DNA tests by Louvain University last year reportedly proved Naundorff could not have been Louis XVII, but Boiry says the results of the study were "premature." Naundorff died in Holland and his death certificate names him as "Louis-Charles of Bourbon, Duke of Normandy, Louis XVII (who was known under the name Charles-Guillaume Naundorff)." So which death certificate tells the truth - the one written in 1795 in Paris or the one signed in 1845 in Holland? Beauffremont hopes the heart turns out to be that of the unfortunate Louis XVII, but he can see some advantage in a negative result. I've only read the first few parts so far, (look forward to reading the rest after I send this), anyway what I read so far reminded of the following: The Great Voting Hoax! by David T. Freeman (1997) http://mind-trek.com/writ-dtf/votehoax/_tgvh02.htm Part 2. A very long time ago, some people used to openly mislead, oppress, and exploit others. There was no doubt in anyone's mind at the time, that they were misleading, oppressing, and exploiting. It was usually done in such a savage, barbaric way, that there was no possibility of misunderstanding or delusion. Those that submitted to this oppression and exploitation, typically to avoid being killed, were called slaves. As the slaves became used to being slaves, and they had children who were also made slaves; they would sometimes be misled into believing that overall, they were better off simply being slaves, so they resisted their masters less and less. But they always knew they were being oppressed and exploited. They were never truly happy with their situation, and would often yearn for freedom and a better way of life. They were easily aroused to regain their freedom, whenever sufficient numbers of them organised themselves to do this, knowing that most or all of the others would also fight back, and they would succeed. However, as time passed, the misleaders, oppressors, and exploiters, learnt better and less obvious ways to mislead, oppress, and exploit. They became better organised, and more efficient in their ways. They realised that by co-operating with each other, in large numbers, that their efforts were much more effective. They also discovered ways to hide many of the bad things they do - such as by making up many extra words, which supposedly meant entirely different things - where really they didn't, but most people unquestionably accepted their words/concepts as "valid" and "appropriate". They organised themselves into a hierarchy of "power" and "authority", with the "head" of this arrangement calling himself by a name of "king" or "emperor". The others had names of "queen", "duke", "prince", "princess", "lord", "archbishop", "bishop", "earl", "viscount", "count", "baron", "knight", etc. Anyone who had one of these "titles" was somehow perceived to be "special" and "important" - their "status" was "elevated" in the minds of "lesser humans" - who "lowered" themselves when in the presence of someone "important". They defined which areas of land were "their territories", "realms", etc. The general belief was that the "king" had a "Divine Right from God" to "rule over" everyone in "his realm". An extensive religious system was established in support of all this, which also served to "educate" everyone about these ways. They also instituted great systems to administer all their slaves - who were no longer called slaves - they were now called: "vassal", "serf", or "subject". The "king's" will was "law" - which "must" be obeyed by everyone else - or they would be clubbed, hung, tortured, slain, burnt, etc. (or at least that's what was threatened!) But this "system" was often severely and openly abused, above what the "subjects" were willing to tolerate, and above what those "in power" had promised to do, or not to do; so the "subjects" would often revolt against their misleaders, oppressors and exploiters. Even so, this "system" proved to be more useful to the oppressors and exploiters, and was used for a long time. Then, not so long ago, the misleaders, oppressors, and exploiters (many of whom were descendants of previous generations of same), discovered even better ways to mislead, oppress, and exploit. They even managed to hide almost all of the bad, and at the same time, exaggerate the good, so much so, that most people believed that they were finally rid of the old, bad ways. They instituted a system whereby their male "subjects" - now usually called "citizens", could "vote" on who was to be the "head" of the "power" and "authority" arrangement (out of various "candidates" offered to them), and sometimes on who was to administer parts of the "system". They called this new "system" the "government". They also changed most of the other names of their hierarchy of "power" and "authority" to: "president" or "prime-minister", "minister", "senator", "representative", "secretary", "judge", "general", "governor", "attorney", "police", "lawyer", etc. Some of the "lawyers" and others in this new "system" wrote up a pretended "contract" which they called the "constitution". In this "constitution", they (the thirty or so people out of millions) claimed to be "We the people", or "Whereas the people have agreed", or similar absurd and fraudulent claims. This "constitution" supposedly "bound" the "government" and all the "citizens" - even though none of the "citizens" had ever signed it,

The Chinese government has confirmed - in writing - that it relied on information derived from U.S. sources to develop its nuclear weapons technology. When a similar conclusion was unanimously reached by the special select committee on Chinese military technology acquisitions chaired last year by Rep. Chris Cox, R.-Calif., it was criticized by the Clinton administration and, more recently, by a committee of professors sponsored by Stanford University. A report in the Dec. 23 issue of the Far Eastern Economic Review reveals that U.S. intelligence experts are now studying a 361-page Chinese government publication titled, "Sources and Methods of Obtaining National Defence Science and Technology." The book was written by Huo Zhonwen and Wang Zongxiao, who describe themselves in the preface as teachers at China's National Defense Science and Technology Information Center, which is a People's Liberation Army-run school in Beijing that instructs Chinese intelligence agents in how to gather technology intelligence wanted by the Chinese military. Amazingly, the book was openly published and sold in the Chinese language in 1991 and went unnoticed by U.S. intelligence agencies for eight years. "Analysts who have seen the book describe it as 'shocking,' and as one of the most important intelligence documents to have emerged on China's military espionage activities since the country launched economic reforms in 1978," reports FEER. "It belies China's claim that it uses indigenous research to develop military technology. It also details how China maintains a thorough system of gathering intelligence from abroad for military purposes, and that the U.S. is the prime focus of that effort." The authors write that the book was put together "with the help of many comrades at the center's liaison office" and that "one of the most important purposes of the book" is "as a reference for those involved in gathering national defense science and technology materials." The authors concluded that about 80 percent of the technology intelligence needed by the Chinese military could be found in open sources, but that 20 percent could be discovered only in classified sources. They paid special attention to U.S. government agencies, including the Energy Department, which overseas U.S. nuclear weapons laboratories. "Detailed explanations are given of technical information sources in the U.S. government," reports FEER, "including Congress, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Technical Information Service. The types of reports issued by each are listed, as well as details of the classification levels of the reports based on their serial numbers." "Classified materials, it says," according to FEER, "can also be obtained through personal relationships, bribes or computer hacking. It describes how at the time of writing, Beijing's DSTIC was setting up a database of 'famous scientists' overseas, including details of their home addresses and 'whether they have ever visited China.'" FEER goes on to say, "The book also provides a glimpse into China's decision in the early 1980s to abandon attempts to develop indigenous military technologies in favor of a massive effort to obtain such technologies from abroad." A federal prosecutor in New Mexico last week indicted Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at the Energy Department's Los Alamos laboratory (who had once visited China), on charges that he had criminally mishandled some of the nation's most sensitive nuclear secrets. During the Chou Dynasty (1134-246 BC) the soybean was designated one of the five sacred grains, along with barley, wheat, millet and rice. However, the pictograph for the soybean, which dates from earlier times, indicates that it was not first used as a food; for whereas the pictographs for the other four grains show the seed and stem structure of the plant, the pictograph for the soybean emphasizes the root structure. Agricultural literature of the period speaks frequently of the soybean and its use in crop rotation. Apparently the soy plant was initially used as a method of fixing nitrogen. The soybean did not serve as a food until the discovery of fermentation techniques, sometime during the Chou Dynasty. Thus the first soy foods were fermented products like tempeh, natto, miso and shogu (soy or tamari sauce). At a later date, possibly in the 2nd century B.C., Chinese scientists discovered that a puree of cooked soybeans could be precipitated with calcium sulfate or magnesium sulfate (plaster of Paris or Epsom salts) to make a smooth pale curd -tofu or bean curd. The use of fermented and precipitated soy products soon spread to other parts of the Orient, notably Japan and Indonesia. Although the highly flavored fermented products have elicited greater interest among scientists and epicures, it is the bland precipitated products that are most frequently used, accounting for approximately 90% of the processed soybeans consumed in Asia today. The increased reliance on bean curd as a source of protein, which occurred between 700 A. D. and the present time, has not necessarily been a beneficial change for the populations of the Orient and Southeast Asia. Fit for Human Consumption? The Chinese, did not eat the soybean as they did other pulses (legumes) such as the lentil, because the soybean contains large quantities of a number of harmful a substances. First among them are potent enzyme inhibitors which block the action of trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion. These"antinutrients" are not completely deactivated during ordinary cooking and can produce serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake. In test animals, diets high in trypsin inhibitors cause enlargement and pathological conditions of the pancreas, including cancer. The soybean also contains hemagglutinin, a clot promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together. Trypsin inhibitors and hemagglutinin have been rightly labeled growth depressant substances. Fortunately they are deactivated during the process of fermentation. However, in precipitated products, enzyme inhibitors concentrate in the soaking liquid rather than in the curd. Thus in tofu and bean curd, these enzyme inhibitors are reduced in quantity, but not completely eliminated. Soybeans are also high in phytic acid or phytates. This is an organic acid, present in the bran or hulls of all seeds, which blocks the uptake of essential minerals-calcium, magnesium, iron and especially zinc-in the intestinal tract. Although not a household word, phytates have been extensively studied. Scientists are in general agreement that grain and legume based diets high in phytates contribute to widespread mineral deficiencies in third world countries. Analysis shows that calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc are present in the plant foods eaten in these areas, but the high phytate content of soy and rice based diets prevents their absorption. The soybean has a higher phytate content than any other grain or legume that has been studied. Furthermore, it seems to be highly resistant to many phytate reducing techniques such as long, slow cooking. Only a long period of fermentation will significantly reduce the phytate content of soybeans. Thus fermented products such as tempeh and miso provide nourishment that is easily assimilated, but the nutritional value of tofu and bean curd, both high in phytates, is questionable. When precipitated soy products are consumed with meat, the mineral blocking effects of the phytates are reduced. The Japanese traditionally eat tofu as part of a mineral-rich fish broth. Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat and dairy products risk severe mineral deficiencies. Escrow doesn't close until after the CDC, so she went down to water the yard. While she was there she decided to make a run to Mexico and pick up some more antibiotics and prescription drugs for our preps. The main point is that her cousin is a civilian construction worker in San Diego. He tells her that he is building "barracks" on San Clemente Island. For those of you who don't know, San Clemente Island is used for bombing practice by the Marine Corps. He says that they have stopped bombing there and he has been contracted to build quite a few barracks on the island. He says that they are also building a number of new barracks near Camp Pendleton. This sent up red flags for me because San Clemente Island is not a practical location to house marines. It is much to far from the mainland. In addition, I can't imagine them building new wooden barracks at Pendleton, especially since the size of the military is getting smaller not larger. What makes more sense is that these may well be detention centers. The contract is a rush job. He and his crew are flown out to the island, where they stay for a week and then flown home on weekends. They saw it as a part of the Cold War. What they found hard to accept were my disclosures that MI5 simply could not do its job. We have always believed that our intelligence services are the best in the world. But how would we know? The edifice of secrecy thrown up around MI5 and MI6 has meant that we have little reliable information about what is done in our name. When I went on record with tales of incompetence and bungling, I was howled down. My information was banned and my character attacked in a series of shadowy anonymous briefings. A government injunction prevents me revealing details of what I learned about MI5's operational incompetence I can, however, relate a true story that happened to me after I had left MI5... In the week after I was released from prison in November 1998, John Wadham, my lawyer and the director of Liberty, the human rights Organization, forwarded a fax from the BBC Arabic Service. It requested an interview with one of their freelance journalists, Souhail Rasheed. In the same week, Anne Sophie Levy, my French lawyer, received a number of calls from this individual offering me £50,000 to do a television interview about my prison experiences. We discussed the political sensitivities of giving an interview to an Arab journalist, but decided that there was little anyone could do about it as long as I didn't make any new disclosures. And, hell, for £50,000 I was more than happy to oblige. The Tuesday of that week, I called him on a French mobile number and agreed to meet to him in the Cafe Beaubourg the following Thursday. My girlfriend Annie Machon and I deliberately arrived about 10 minutes early, hoping to see Rasheed's arrival. We sat in a corner but a waiter approached us to say that Rasheed was waiting for us on the first floor where he had an excellent view of both entrances. He looked like an academic. He wore little round, tortoiseshell rimmed glasses, was grey and balding with a pointy beard. The look was completed by a pipe and newspaper like something out of a bad movie. Rasheed told us he wasn't going to beat about the bush. He declared that he was a representative of the Libyan Intelligence Services (LIS) and was licensed to carry a firearm. He patted a large bulge below his armpit. He then went on to detail what we could get out of this meeting. As he spoke, he kept sparking up his flamethrower lighter. Later, Annie and I confessed that we could only think of one thing as he spoke: his using the lighter to torture some terrified prisoner. It transpired, unsurprisingly, that the LIS wanted me to go to Libya. In return, I could name my price. We are talking millions of pounds. We have bank accounts already set up in Switzerland for this sort of thing. But I had no intention of being a traitor. I was just too scared to say no in case he took this as a declaration of war. I wondered if the lighter was in fact a recording device. I think he realised he had scared us with the mention of the LIS. He began to backtrack. If we went to Libya, we would, he elaborated, only be meeting the Colonel for tea. I could give my evidence about MI6's failed plot to kill Gaddafi and about Lockerbie in writing. And the Libyans would, of course, help me get a book published. I had absolutely no intention of betraying my country, but I did discuss the possibility of giving some sort of statement to the Libyan authorities on the Gaddafi plot. But without leaving France. Rasheed said that any book deal or payment was dependent on my going to Libya. Don't worry, he said. No one there thinks you were involved in the plot, thereby immediately giving away to me that they did. They wanted me in Libya to answer questions. Not as a witness but as a coconspirator. For a second or two, I left the conversation and let my mind follow this to its logical conclusion torture, show trial and execution. The cynical might think I am overdramatising, but I spent two years reading about atrocities committed by the regime that would have embarrassed medieval despots. There was no way I was going to Libya. Rasheed, I think, suspected he had blown it. But he ploughed on, switching tack. He asked me if I would be prepared to give a statement about the Gaddafi plot to their lawyer in Paris. I could see no harm in revealing information already in the public domain. Anyway, I had information about the murder of innocent civilians. Didn't I have a duty to pass evidence to those concerned with its investigation? I said that I would have to consult my lawyer first. The answers from legal scholars: Yes, no and maybe. This Pandora's box of legal ambiguities was opened this week when the Committee on Financial Disclosure, a panel of 15 federal judges, voted to deny a request from APBnews.com to obtain copies of the financial disclosures for all 1,600 federal judges. APBnews.com had planned to publish the documents on the Internet in a way that would make it easy for the public to use them. The committee of judges said that federal law prohibits making a disclosure available to anyone who has not made a written request to the federal bench. If the disclosures appeared on the Internet, then anyone could see the public documents. Violates constitutional guarantees? Experts agree that federal law gives the judicial branch the right to know who asks for a disclosure and the right to censor information for security reasons. However, some experts say a blanket order meant to censor all the disclosures from the Internet violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantees of free speech, freedom of the press and equal protection under the law. It's also clear, say scholars, that the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 -- the Watergate-era law that requires federal officials to file an annual listing of gifts, free travel, loans and assets -- has contradictory language. I had an intense relationship with a woman I lived with for a few years. We eventually broke up and she returned a work shirt of mine which she wore a lot. Of course she had laundered it first, but I easily detected her scent. This may not seem unusual, but I could continue to do that for YEARS afterward even after normal usage as a work shirt by me. I speculate that the sense is always there and at work, but is overlaid by our regular sense of smell. Joshua2 A quick comment from a lurker on the list. I tend to agree/assert that the sense has been dulled through time, but I believe it is still active. A baby can identify its' mother by scent. I lived for a time, platonically, with a woman, and could tell about a day before anything showed up in the bathroom trash can, that she was about to cycle. I have no idea how, but I always assumed it was some older, or animalistic sense that was foretelling the event. Finally, and most convincingly, for me, is that I have my dogs old leather collar. He was put to sleep over 8 years ago, having reached 14 yrs old. He wore the collar for probably 10 of those 14 years of being my loyal childhood companion. To this day, I can place this collar under my nose, and evoke memories of him. I can smell him through the still strong smell of the leather. My sisters dog, whenever he is at my place, will always find this item, and inspect it thouroghly by scent. Other items of leather are left alone by him, yet this item seems to have an additional scent that intrigues this 2 yr old dog. I may be imagining the scent I think I smell, but the dog is certainly sensing something in that collar. I like to believe that my old friends scent is still what I am getting when I sniff the collar. I think the abilities of this organ are seriously muted by some mechanism of natural selection, or possibly industrialized society, removing the need to pay attention to this sense. Belanger©1989 Editions Duang Kamol Siam Square, Bangkok, Thailand ISBN 974-210-4808 --[1]-- THE ROLE OF THE CIA THE CIA AND THE DRUG INDUSTRY The mid-1960s marked the peak of the European heroin industry, and shortly thereafter it went into a sudden decline. In the early 1960s the Italian government launched a crackdown on the Sicilian Mafia, and in 1967 the Turkish government announced that it would begin phasing out cultivation of opium poppies on the Anatolian plateau in order to deprive Marseilles heroin laboratories of their most important source of raw material. But, unwilling to abandon their lucrative narcotics racket the Corsican syndicatesand the American Mafiashifted their sources of supply to Southeast Asia, where surplus opium production and systematic government corruption created an ideal climate for large scale heroin production. And once again American foreign policy played a role in creating these favorable conditions. During the early 1950s the CIA had backed the formation of a Nationalist Chinese guerilla army in Burma, a group which still controls as much as half of the world's opium supply, and in Laos the CIA created a M eo mercenary army whose commander manufactured heroin for sale to, among others, American GIs in South Vietnam. The State Department provided unconditional support for corrupt governments known to be engaged in the international drug traffic. In late 1969 new heroin laboratories sprang up in the tri-border and where Burma, Thailand, and Laos converge, and unprecedented quantities of heroin started flooding into the United States. Nurtured by a seemingly limitless flow of heroin, America's total number of addicts skyrocketed. The bloody Saigon street fighting of April-May 1955 marked the end of French colonial rule and the beginning of direct American intervention in Vietnam. When the First Indochina war came to an end, the French government had planned to withdraw its forces gradually over a two- or three-year period in order to protect its substantial political and economic interests in southern Vietnam. The armistice concluded at Geneva, Switzerland, in July 1954 called for the French Expeditionary Corps to withdraw into the southern half of Vietnam for two years, until an all-Vietnam referendum determined the nation's political future. Convinced that Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Viet Minh were going to score an overwhelming electoral victory, the French began negotiating a diplomatic understanding with the government in Hanoi. But America's moralistic cold warriors were not quite so flexible. Speaking before the American Legion Convention several weeks after the signing of the Geneva Accords, New York's influential Catholic prelate, Cardinal Spellman, warned that: "If Geneva and what was agreed upon there means anything at all, it means ... taps for the buried hopes of freedom in Southeast Asia! Taps for the newly betrayed millions of Indochinese who must now learn the awful facts of slavery from their eager Communist masters!" Rather than surrendering southern Vietnam to the "Red rulers' godless goons," the Eisenhower administration decided to create a new nation where none had existed before. Looking back on America's post-Geneva policies from the vantage point of the mid 1960s, the Pentagon Papers concluded that South Vietnam" was essentially the creation of the United States. The French had little enthusiasm for this emerging nation and its premier, and so the French had to go. Pressured by American military aid cutbacks and prodded by the Diem regime, the French stepped up their troop withdrawal. By April 1956 the once mighty French Expeditionary Corps had been reduced to less than 5,000 men, and American officers had taken over their jobs as advisers to the Vietnamese army. The Americans criticized the French as hopelessly "colonialist" in their attitudes, and the French officials retorted that the Americans were naive. During this difficult transition period one French official denounced "the meddling Americans who, in their incorrigible guilelessness believed that once the French Army leaves, Vietnamese independence will burst forth for all to see." But America's fall from innocence was not long in coming. Only seven years later, the U.S. Embassy and the CIA engineered a coup that toppled Diem and left him murdered in the back of an armored personnel carrier. And by 1965 the United States found itself fighting a war that was almost a carbon copy of Frances colonial war. The U.S. Embassy was wearisomely trying, but effectually unable, to manipulate the same clique of corrupt Saigon politicos that had confounded the French in their day. The U.S. Army looked just like the French Expeditionary Corps to most Vietnamese, only instead of Senegalese and Moroccan colonial levies, the U.S. Army was assisted by Thai and South Korean troops. The 30-patient pilot study does not prove this unusual brain-stimulating treatment really helps depression, researchers cautioned. But sufferers of severe depression have clamored to try the experimental treatment since The Associated Press disclosed the preliminary research in October. The pacemaker's manufacturer, Cyberonics Inc., received several hundred phone calls from patients. Researchers reported Wednesday on an Internet version of the medical journal Biological Psychiatry that this "vagus nerve stimulation" seemed to help 40 percent of study participants. Joyce Daniels of Charleston, S.C., suffered severe depression for the past five years. Medications and even electric shock therapy failed. "Sometimes I'd cry for a week. ... I got to a place where I'd just sit on the end of the couch all day long," she said. She had the experimental brain stimulator implanted in March, and says she gradually began improving. "It's not like you put it in and wake up the next day and feel the whole world's changed," Daniels said. But around October, she says she felt largely recovered. "The last five years I was walking through this fog, where there's nothing really clear to me in my mind, and all of a sudden I got up one morning - my mind has cleared up." The stimulator is essentially a brain pacemaker. A generator the size of a pocket watch is implanted into the chest. Wires snake up the neck to the vagus nerve, which runs from the neck into a brain region thought important for regulating mood. Every few minutes, the stimulating sends tiny electric shocks to that nerve and thus on to the brain. The stimulator already is sold as a treatment for epilepsy. For depression, it is "extremely encouraging as a potential treatment," but more study is needed to prove the effect, said the lead investigator, Dr. John Rush of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Several study participants took antidepressants along with the brain stimulator, and it is possible the implant somehow helps medicine work better, said co-researcher Dr. Lauren Marangell of the Baylor College of Medicine. A 200-patient study scheduled to begin next summer will offer a better test. Doctors are debating implanting all the patients with a stimulator, but not immediately turning on all the implants, hoping to prove any relief is not just a placebo effect. During the 30-second zaps, the implant can cause temporary hoarseness in about 30 percent to 40 percent of patients. Position one: Serbian armed forces engaged in genocide on a vast scale; the NATO/KLA forces were right and the Yugoslav government was wrong. Position two: Serbian forces were bad but not as bad as Position One suggests; there was right and wrong on both sides. And Position three: there is no evidence that Serbian forces committed atrocities. Moreover the Serbs were fighting a just war; they were and remain right. POSITION 1: NATO ARGUES GENOCIDE Position One includes a broad spectrum of NATO leaders, political parties and various intellectuals. In Europe, most of the Social Democrat leaders and many of the conservative ones, in the US, Clinton as well as Dole plus many supposed intellectuals, such as Christopher Hitchens from The Nation, Todd Gitlin who writes for Mother Jones, and Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust celebrity. The list is incomplete, to be sure, but you get the idea: a diverse group with enthusiastic support for NATO as the organizing principle. Position One justified bombing Yugoslavia by arguing it was necessary to stop a modern-day Holocaust: "Mr. Clinton tried to paint a compelling portrait of the atrocities inside Kosovo, evoking images of Hitler's slaughter of the Jews".(1) We were told that perhaps hundreds of thousands of Albanians were being butchered. (How bombing would halt this alleged slaughter was unclear but that didn't matter; the idea here was really punishment not prevention.) NATO and the media continued making these Holocaust claims after the bombing stopped. Here's an example from Canadian TV: OFF Camera [i.e. Narrator]: Skender Murati would not protest if all the Serbs left. He doesn't care if it now appears the Albanians are no better than the Serbs. He's gone through too much. OFF: Do you think it's possible that you could ever live with Serbs again? SKENDER MURATI (Translated): For me, life with Serbs has ended, no matter what happens in the future. There is no life with a Serb anymore ...when you take into account that hundreds of thousands of people are dead. [Our emphasis. From THE NATIONAL MAGAZINE, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC TV) September 27, 1999] Note the technique used here. The Narrator, that is, the Voice of Anonymous Authority, says: "He [the Albanian gentleman] doesnt care if it now appears the Albanians are no better than the Serbs." The Narrator offers no evidence that the Serbs are bad; he merely reminds his viewers of what they have been told in countless earlier broadcasts: Serbs provide the standard against which other evils are to be measured. Thus, no matter how "bad" the Albanians are they can only play catch-up with the Serbs. The Narrator uses a similar method to characterize Mr. Murati's attitude: this Albanian has "gone through too much" to worry about what outsiders think of Albanians. The Narrator mentions Mr. Muratti's suffering in passing, thereby communicating that said suffering is beyond question: of course he suffered. Didn't all Albanians suffer at Serbian hands? The possibility that Mr. Muratti's "pain" may be a Public Relations lie invented to build support for the Kosovo Liberation Army and against the Serbs is beneath consideration. In this way Mr. Muratti's remarks are validated in advance and we are set-up for the slam-dunk: Mr. Murati refers in passing to "hundreds of thousands of dead." No evidence is presented for this crazy claim; that because there IS no evidence. But by dint of clever writing and because viewers have been subjected to so much anti-Serbian baloney in the past that they have trouble thinking straight, the "hundreds of thousands" figure is swallowed, whole. This particular show was aired Sept. 27th. By then a miracle had occurred, at that time still unnoticed by the Western Media. A group of Spanish forensic scientists had held a press conference where they said: NATO lied. We were sent to Kosovo, they said. We were told we'd be doing autopsies on 2000 victims of Serbian genocide. It was all lies. It was all lies! May those Spanish forensic experts and policemen live long, happy lives. All the countries of Africa have demanded a five-year delay in implementation in TRIPs while these changes are effected. The date of 1 January 2000 as the deadline for implementation is itself under flux an India does not need to rush to implement. As a member of WTO, India can join the African countries in changing the implementation period. 2. The collapse of the Seattle Round of WTO should be used by India to increase its national sovereign space in shaping national legislation and national economic policies. 3. The US which is the country applying the maximum pressure to implement TRIPs and had initiated a TRIPs dispute against India is itself going to vote on whether to remain a member of the WTO and whether to continue to pay dues to the Geneva-based organisation. There is therefore no justification in exaggerating the role and power of WTO internationally and in India's national affairs. 4. Notwithstanding all the above the contents of the laws are anti-people and anti-national. The drafts have all gone way beyond the mandate of the TRIPs Agreement. ** IPR ALERT ON PLANT VARIETY LAW The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Bill, 1999 (Bill No. 123 of 1999) is ANTI-FARMER, ANTI-NATIONAL and will promote BIOPIRACY THE GOVERNMENT CLAIMS THE BILL SEEKS TO: Give effect to Article 27.3(b) of Part II of the TRIPs Agreement of WTO [Statement of Objects and Reasons, page 32,33 of Bill] HOW THE BILL UNDERMINES FARMERS' RIGHTS AND NATIONAL INTERESTS: This Article of TRIPs is under review and is already being challenged by India in the WTO and the Organisation of African Unity and the Central American countries. The Clause merely refers to farmers as cultivators with a right to cultivate and sell farm produce, not to farmers as innovators or to farmers' inalienable right to save, produce and freely exchange seeds and propagative material. It fails to grant protection to farmers breeding and farmers innovation in the form of community rights, which is the basis of "sui generis" laws being drafted around the world. This is just about the most blatant example yet of the utter corruption and devolution of the major news media organizations into a monolithic, spineless mouthpiece for the "state". How much easier it is to control the "news" (what's that again?) a large percentage of Americans will hear, if the raw information gathered from all three networks funnels into only one "processing" facility, where any inconsistencies with the official sanctioned versions of events can be discreetly expunged and smoothed out, before the polished, "synthesized" information is dispersed back to the member organizations for publication/broadcast. And since all THREE networks involved in this "deal" will be spewing and regurgitating the exact same sanitized, edited, adulterated, denatured and spin-doctored version of reality, why bother watching ANY of them? With regard to these three major news outlets it's bye-bye, and so long... to any semblance of journalistic integrity and to the final vestiges of supposedly fundamentally inviolable "free press." Killed from within, no less, with nary a shot having been fired... at least in this case. In a sheer masterpiece of "big lie" doubletalk, CBS News president Andrew Heyward said the new system "enables each network... to devote more resources to its own coverage ... which will ultimately differentiate one station... from its competitors." Right. What WILL occur is the exact OPPOSITE, obviously. Mad Cow, Brain Disease Said Linked .c The Associated Press BY PAUL RECER WASHINGTON (AP) - A laboratory experiment gives powerful new evidence that an infectious protein that causes mad cow disease also causes a new type of fatal human brain disease that has killed 51 people in Europe. The study, appearing Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, makes clear that people in Britain who developed a new type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease could have gotten it from eating meat from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the so-called mad cow disease. The brain disease has not been found in America. Experts said the study also suggests the infectious protein, called prion, that causes the diseases can move more easily between species more easily than once believed. ``These findings argue unequivocally that BSE and the new variant CJD are the same strain of prion,'' said Dr. Stephen DeArmond, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, and a senior author of the study. An outbreak of BSE occurred in British cattle early this decade. Later, some people in Britain developed a new, more deadly type of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. In 1996, experts suggested mad cow disease possibly could be linked to the brain-wasting human disease. The European Union banned import of British beef for three years until last August. France still denies import of the meat. Officials in Britain banned sale of bone-in domestic beef in 1997 and lifted the sanction last Thursday. More than 175,000 British cattle died of BSE during the 1990s. At least 48 people in Britain have died of the new form of CJD, along with two in France and one in Ireland. Neither disease has been detected in the United States. Although a link between mad cow disease and the new type of CJD had been suggested, there were experts who questioned the connection and contended a true scientific link was lacking. The new San Francisco study virtually removes doubt, said Dr. Donald Price, a neurological disease researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. ``This lends new credence to the idea that the new variant CJD is a direct result of consuming products from animals with BSE,'' Price said Monday. ``It is something the European community should be concerned about.'' Officials for the British health and agricultural departments in London declined comment Monday, saying they have not yet read the new study. Since the new form of CJD is thought to have an incubation period of at least 10 years, experts say it is impossible to know now how many people have been infected. Co-authors of the study include Dr. Stanley Prusinger, a UCSF professor who won a Nobel Prize in 1997 for his discovery that the protein prion caused BSE. In the study, researchers created a strain of mice that had genes for the normal form of bovine prion protein. The mice were inoculated with prions taken from diseased cows. After 250 days, the test mice all developed neurological disease. In another group of the mice, the researchers injected priors taken from patients who had the new form of CJD. After 250 days, these mice also developed neurological disease. Prions from the diseased mice were then injected into a third group of mice. They also developed the disease. DeArmond said the mice with the disease had identical symptoms and incubation periods. Also, a microscopic examination of their brains found the same type of lesions. In CJD, the brain is pocked with holes caused by the death of cells. Mice injected with scrapie, a sheep form of prion disease, got neurological disease, but it was different from the infection linked to BSE, researchers said. BSE is thought to have developed in British cattle whose feed contained protein from sheep that had been infected with scrapie. Britain now bans the use of animal parts in cattle feed. In the United States, the FDA issued a similar ban in 1997. Prions, a name that stands for ``infectious particles,'' usually are normal proteins found in most mammals. But when the prion shape is changed - either from infection or from contact with another malformed prion - the particle can cause brain disease. Because it attacks the brain, symptoms can include bizarre behavior in animals. For this reason, BSE is often called ``mad cow disease. Martin McOmber mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Seattle Times staff reporter By the end of the evening, even the most outrageous stories seemed dulled by repetition: beatings in jail, business owners tear-gassed outside their stores, innocent bystanders arrested, peaceful protesters silenced. Seattle City Council President Sue Donaldson convened last night's unprecedented eight-hour public hearing to give people a chance to tell city officials what happened on the streets and in the jails during last week's World Trade Organization meeting. But the marathon of testimony by some 120 people will provide a powerful backdrop of anger and frustration as a task force of three council members launches what could be one of the most explosive investigations in the city's history. "It galvanized my determination to get some answers for what the hell went wrong," said Councilman Jim Compton, who will chair the ad hoc committee doing the investigation. "There were some genuine horror stories I heard." Hundreds of people packed the downtown library's woefully inadequate auditorium for a chance to complain about their treatment. The ground rules were simple: three minutes to speak out. By 4 p.m., as the public hearing got under way, the line of speakers stretched out the library's Fifth Avenue doors and around the block. Even the pouring rain and long wait did little to discourage those who came to speak their piece. "I feel it is important for everyone to learn what happened," said Russ Wilson, 30, of Seattle. "When we get together, it seems our voices can be heard." But the crowd quickly grew restless. A broken cable cut sound to the loudspeaker outside. Dozens of people crowded around the smoked-glass windows of the auditorium to watch. There were heated exchanges at the doors as security guards refused to let any more people inside. "This is very symbolic to me: the whole issue is about being heard," fumed Sam Eliason, 36, who took the day off work to attend. "There has got to be a room around here that could fit everyone. How about the stadium? We bought it." In a bid to defuse tensions over the inadequate space, Donaldson hastily scheduled a second public hearing at Seattle Center on Tuesday. The exact location will be determined later, but the meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Not all the council was there Only five of the City Council members stayed for all or at least most of the public hearing. Margaret Pageler did not attend at all. Peter Clarke, Pageler's legislative aide, said she could not attend because she had two other committments, including a meeting with the state Board of Health. Richard McIver and Jan Drago left early to attend a dinner in honor of former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is visiting Seattle. Retiring Councilwoman Tina Podlodowski left early to pick up her children and did not return. The sight of just five council members on stage clearly disappointed many speakers, leading some to wonder if dining with a foreign dignitary, even one of Mandela's stature, was more important than listening to the outrage of citizens. "Where are the other City Council members?" asked Mark Canfield, as those outside the library pounded the windows in support. Others asked where Mayor Paul Schell was. The mayor-council rift In some ways, it was probably a good thing the city's top politician wasn't around; he might have been booed from the room. More than a dozen speakers called for his resignation, and the rest of the audience seemed to like the idea. The mayor had asked to attend the public hearing, but Donaldson told him this was a "council event." The exchange is the latest sign of the worsening relationship between the mayor and council, a battle that will likely be played out repeatedly in the months ahead. Seattle is largely considered a strong-mayor, strong-council form of government. Like the mayor, all nine City Council members are elected citywide. As the legislative body, the council often acts independently of the mayor. Last night's public hearing was, in one sense, a bid by the City Council to affirm its role as an independent check on the mayor, much like a hostile Congress often holds hearings or investigates actions by the White House. Manuel Noriega. Marchers representing victims' groups, student associations and unions gathered for a rally -- dubbed the ``Black March'' -- on the 10th anniversary of the invasion. ``We are marching because we feel that the U.S. should meet the needs of all those injured in the invasion,'' Yolanda Varcasia, president of the El Chorrillo Small Business Association told Reuters at the rain-swept rally in central Panama City. The association represents some 300 traders from Panama City's El Chorrillo district, which burned during the invasion. It did not specify the amount of damages sought. Then-U.S. President George Bush ordered the invasion of 26,000 troops to capture Noriega and bring him to the United States to face drug trafficking and racketeering charges. Washington has estimated that about 300 Panamanians died in the invasion. But Panamanian human rights groups say the civilian death toll topped 3,000. ``We want justice for all the people killed in the vile massacre carried out by the U.S. Army,'' said Sebastian Vergara, head of action group the Families of the Fallen. Vergara added that El Chorrillo residents who lost homes and businesses during the U.S. assault on the headquarters of Noriega's Defense Forces have received $11.5 million in compensation. But he says that's not enough since it had to be divided among some 3,000 people. Still, not everyone in Panama shared the marchers' anger. Some recall the invasion as a move that ended two decades of military dictatorship. ``We were delighted. All the years of military oppression were over,'' Engineer Alberto Dominguez told Reuters. ``I cried for joy when I heard the news that Noriega had surrendered.'' Noriega took refuge in the Vatican Embassy in Panama City on Christmas Eve, but gave himself up to U.S. forces on Jan. 3, 1990. I think that there is a big risk that too much info is now coming out into the public arena to keep these RICO govt crimes that "ruined their lives" contained forever. If there is a major downturn in the economy or more attempts by the govt to take all our civil rights by staging additional "burnings of the Reichstag" with "stings gone bad" or phony "bin laden type attacks they institute themselves in disguise, I would expect these Heroes and much of the public (especially the hunter-fisher-farmer types) to "go off", especially if they continuing losing everything and "all hope".
