Hi Lori, a slurpyis an icy drink they usually come in a variety of flavors such as cherry, lemon, orange, grape, and so on. Hi Josh, I am well aware of Android and its games. In fact, was considering one for a very long time. Thing is while Android has a fair selection it isn't the same selection so user preference would have a lot to do with the purchasing process here. Hi, I have similar experiences. I now avoid HP like the plague myself because their systems tend to be very below the par on average, and I know others with similar experiences. My dad, for instance, had a HP laptop for about six months, very barely used, and it died. So I don't generally buy HP anything if I can help it these days. Hi Cara, That's just it though. I happen to live in an extremely rural area and thus there is no Apple stores near me within a hundred miles or so of me. If I really want an iPhone I'd pretty much have to buy direct from the carrier which do have payment plans. Just none of them currently affordable for me given my limited funds right now. Hi Jacob, Oh, cool. That puts things in an entirely new light. I can see where you are coming from with this, and admit it would be something worth looking into. Re: [Audyssey] audio rain maker.
Hi Ishan, All subject to opinion of course, but what exactly do you have in mind for this rain game? I haven't heard a lot of details on what exactly what you want in terms of a game. I have only the vaguest idea what you are talking about here. I have no idea how it would work, how the game would be played, how one would score, what one would have to do, and about all I gather is you make rain. So weather or not it would be fun is wide open to interpretation at this point. Re: [Audyssey] Tom, your medical problems are worse than mine are.
Hi Ron, Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. As for being able to remove the entire tumor they aren't really sure yet. It happens to be on a part of the brain where they might not be able to take it all without suffering adverse brain damage. So Tuesday they are going to take all they can safely take and hopefully try and treat the rest with radiation or some other means. So sad to say this surgery is really only the beginning of treatment and not the cure. I just have to take it one day at a time. Hi Charles, As far as I know yes it should. Re: [Audyssey] How To Find a Specific Sound Effect
Hi Gavin, Honestly I'm not sure what advice if any I can give. Especially, if you are looking for a specific sound like that. I just generally examine all the sound libraries and look for sounds I want, but if you are looking for something specific I don't know if there is any way without checking each and every sound and sound library to hunt down a specific sound. It is definitely a case of the proverbial needle in a haystack as there is usually little if any info on what sounds were used in any specific show or TV series. Re: [Audyssey] Supporting you Tom.
Hi Ron, Thanks for the support. Yeah, I definitely do not envy you your health concerns as they sound even worse than mine in retrospect. Tuesday morning I will be going into the hospital to have a massive brain tumor removed. It is currently the size of a small lemon and has to be either removed or reduced in size as soon as humanly possible so it is not going to be some minor procedure. All the same once it is gone it should hopefully be the beginning of my recovery process, and I won't have severe headaches like I have been having for the last few months. Hi Ishan, Sure thing. The temporary moderator of the list will be Shane Davidson the same person who runs the list behind the scenes. So it should be a fairly seamless transition for all involved. Re: [Audyssey] games and where to get them.
Hi Lisa, Fortunately, most games except for some very old 8-bit and 16-bit Dos games will run fine under Windows 7 provided all the dependencies are met. A case in point is the Kitchens Inc games. Since they were all written in VB 6 which is no longer officially supported by Windows 7 and above you need to install Jim's Winkit file found on his site which adds the necessary files and components you need for his games. As for if there is a Dos box I am assuming you are talking about the Windows Command Prompt. Yes, Windows 7 still has it, but it will only work with 32-bit and 64-bit Dos applications. It will not work with anything 8-bit or 16-bit do to changes in the Windows architecture and the new 64-bit processors. That said, there is an alternative. There is a talking Dosbox floating around that you can install that still plays old Dos games, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Still, barring anything else it really is the only thing available currently for very old Dos games on modern Windows. Re: [Audyssey] Important Message About Me and the List
Hi Dallas, Well, the good news is I may have found a temporary moderator to take over the day to day list management for me in my absence so I don't think the list will implode. If it does the temporary moderator will be able to handle it. [Audyssey] Important Message About Me and the List
Hello everyone, This is a very important message from your friendly neighborhood moderator and list owner to let you know what to expect over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, I have some very bad news to share, and to be frank about it I have held off way too long without saying anything. The news essentially is this. For quite some time my health has been in serious decline. I've been tied up with medical tests, doctor appointments, and other things dealing with my medical situation thus have virtually no time to attend to the Audyssey List, working on writing games, or about anything else outside of my day to day situation. I had intended to promote one or two moderators in my place to look after the list, but unfortunately my life has been so utterly crazy of late I have not even managed to do that. So I hope that all of you can get along and bare with me as it is likely or even possible over the next few weeks this list will not have any hands on moderation or oversight as I go into and out of the hospital for various operations, testing, and so on. If I can I will try and assign a moderator before I go into the hospital, but given the time frame I'm thinking that is doubtful. Plus I would hate to just dump the list on him or her and leave for x amount of time anyway. In any case here is the scoop. Thursday I'll be going into the hospital all day for various tests. The following Tuesday I will be going into the hospital for an operation, and will probably not have internet access for a few days as I recover So I do expect at least a week or so in mid November without a list moderator to look after things here. I Can see that probably won't be a problem, nor am I expecting one, but I thought you all should know Justin case you try to reach me and I am totally unreachable over the next two or three weeks. Re: [Audyssey] Important Message About Me and the List
Hi Christina and all, Thanks. That will be greatly appreciated. These last few months have certainly been trying ones for me not knowing from one day to the next what my future holds so any thoughts, prayers, and anything else anyone wants to send my way are certainly welcome. As you said my health and well being is the most important thing right now, and that is what I have to focus on right now. While I'd certainly love doing other things like writing and playing games, for example, it just isn't that feasible given my medical problems at the moment. So I have been taking things one day at a time living minute to minute the best way that I can. Re: [Audyssey] looking for another game please.
Hi Dark, Actually, I believe the ICANN shut the Bavisoft site down last year not 2012. In any case it makes little difference because as you say they were long since not a going concern by then. They wouldn't answer their e-mails, couldn't be contacted by phone, and were notoriously bad about not shipping orders for their games. So regardless of when they were shutdown they were pretty much done anyway. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] looking for another game please.
Hi Jody, Unfortunately, that is true. There is a lot of things the developer of Bavisoft could have and probably should have done, but he strikes me as not really giving a care. He wrote Chillingham and Grizzly Gulch and after that pretty much let things go without too much in the way of technical support, follow ups, and insuring people can legally obtain his products once Bavisoft closed its doors for good. Its sad, but in my opinion the games weren't that good to begin with so aren't that much of a loss to the community in my opinion. Cheers! Hi Simon, I understand your position and why you disagree. However, as the legality of sharing the Bavisoft games are in doubt we still consider sharing them on list piracy. At least officially. What you and others do off list is none of our concern and why I mentioned if anyone wishes to share to please do so off list. Re: [Audyssey] looking for another game please.
Hi Simon, I take it by your comments that you have never played any of the Bavisoft games completely through. It is for that reason I think your opinion might be a bit premature. Weather the games are good or bad or not is of course highly subjective, but the thing that really turned me off those games is once you solve all the puzzles there is no longer any replay value in the games. The second time you play the game will be nearly the same as the first time you play the game. Thus I found them boring and uninteresting the second time through since there isn't a lot of change from game to game. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] 7-128 games
Hi Maureen, Yes, the 7-128 games will work with Windows 7 64-bit. They are compatible with most versions of Windows as far as I am aware of. As far as the games go yes you need to buy the Perceptions Gamebook from 7-128 in order to play their games. Most of their games require the Gamebook to play. Unfortunately, the Perceptions Gamebook no longer has a demo and is not free which is likely the reason the Audiogames.net links do not work. Cheers! Hi John, No need. Just go to Daniel Zingaro's website and download them. While I won't prevent you from uploading and sharing the files I will say it would be further ahead if you just give out the actual websites where said games can be found so people can bookmark them for future reference rather than relying on Sendspace, Dropbox, or some other method which is only temporary. Hi Dark and all, Daniel Zingaro's games such as Chainlink, and Search Party can be found on Daniel Zingaro's personal website http://www.danielzingaro.com where they have been for the last several years. So if you don't know about Daniel Zingaro's site I'd suggest updating the Audiogames.net database to reflect that as it is the official site where all of the old DanZ Games can be downloaded from. Hi John, Glad to hear of your progress with the audio games archive. That said, I sincerely hope it does not become a replacement for the developer's own sites as those are usually preferable in a lot of cases than downloading the games from a third-party site. Re: [Audyssey] Fw: [aon-announce] California Countdown Published!
Hi Will, Essentially the way these gamebooks work is you load them up in your favorite web browser and follow the story. Along with it you will need a dice rolling program such as GMA Dice and a text editor like notepad to keep track of your stats. As you move through the gamebook's story you will need to roll the dice and compare it to various stats to figure out if you succeeded or failed to perform a task. It is a lot more manual than a traditional game, but quite a lot like traditional D except for the fact you are playing by yourself rather than with a group. Re: [Audyssey] subscription links to other english speaking gaming mailing lists
Hi, If you are talking about general purpose blind gaming lists I am unaware of any others. Audyssey has been the primary gaming list for the blind for close to 20-years now, and there really aren't any other mailing lists with the same kind of community or support. The only other primary resource is the Audiogames.net Forum which has a larger community, but is a forum not a mailing list. There are other blind gaming lists, but all of those are run by the developers themselves in order to discuss their particular products. For instance, the GMA Talk list is specifically there for discussing GMA's titles like Lone Wolf, Time of Conflict, Tank Commander, but is not there for discussing other companies games. If you would like a list of subscription information for private mailing lists I may be able to help with that although all of the gaming lists are restricted to specific games. Hi, A friend of Jim's apparently is taking over his projects, maintaining them, and will be working on bug fixes etc. I do not know however if he plans to add new features or what his long term plans regarding those games will be. I will say though that while a full 162 game season for Baseball would be nice it is quite a lot of work. Not impossible, but a lot of work for one developer. I've considered writing such a game myself, but my health has taken a dramatic turn for the worse over the last couple of years so I'm not physically up to creating anything that complex at the moment. Re: [Audyssey] looks like i've finally subscribed.
Hi, There was nothing wrong with your previous subscription. The only reason your messages did not appear to go through to the list is you were impatient and did not wait on the moderator, me, to approve your subscription. Unlike other mailing lists you may be familiar with we have a strict security policy regarding new membership. As was stated in the welcome message, which I'm suspecting you did not read, it states that you have to be approved by a list moderator before you can post messages. You can't just subscribe and start sending a million messages without the moderator first clearing you for posting status. Unfortunately, I myself am having a lot of medical issues right now. Tuesday I was in the hospital for tests, I had some doctor appointments yesterday, and earlier this morning so I have not been around to do much list management of late. My other moderator quit some months ago and has not been replaced. So I apologize for the unusual delay. The main reason I am explaining all this is you are making a false assumption about your previous subscription, and just wanted you to know that your subscription was perfectly fine before you killed it.The only problem was you were impatient and did not give me enough time to get to it and update your status. So when I finally had time to take care of the matter you had already killed the subscription. Cheers! On 10/15/15, Nail Alimzhanovwrote: > Hi guys. Re: [Audyssey] gmagames and windows seven
Hi Lisa, Yes, the GMA games will work with Windows 7. Re: [Audyssey] games turning against me
Hi Devin, It is true that the language Aprone uses, VB 6, is getting a bit old and has some problems but that wasn't the root of Lori's problem. All that she had to do was delete an ini file and that solved her problem with Castaways. So, yeah, Shaun's advice was major overkill and in my opinion superfluous. He has a tendency to exaggerate and go to extremes when it comes to fixing small problems. I can not tell you how many times I have read posts similar to the one below where the problem was easy to solve but Sean's solution was reformat and reinstall everything from scratch plus one or two other pieces of technical advice that has nothing to do with the situation at hand he pulls out of his rear. Re: [Audyssey] games turning against me
Shaun, Honestly, can you please stop dispensing tech advice on this list. The reason being often your advice is overkill, doesn't address the specific problem the person has, and sometimes makes you look and sound like a fool at the same time. Reason being is Lori had a simple question about Swamp and Castaways that Aprone thankfully answered promptly. However, your advice was to get a serge protector and a UPS unit, which is good general advice, but has nothing to do with answering Lori's question. In the previous message before that you suggested maybe a reformat would work. That's just poor tech advice and if you do not have any other advice other than someone should "reformat their computer" it really says how clueless you really are. Point being as a moderator and a fairly technically minded person I'm putting you on notice if you continue to freely dispense poor and superfluous tech advice you pull out of your backside I'm strongly considering booting you from the list. Re: [Audyssey] flash games
Hello Marvin, Yes, it is possible to make a Flash game accessible, but the only way I know of to accomplish that is by making the game self-voicing. As how to accomplish that I'd say the easiest method would be by using prerecorded voice clips which wouldn't necessarily work for a browser based game. You'll likely have to use some text to speech engine instead. As to the issue of a universal speech engine for the browser there isn't any that I know of. You are talking about something that simply does not exist. Every platform in existence has a totally different way of handling text to speech and therefore to be totally universal you are going to have to take the time and effort to support them all or give up on universal speech output. To be blunt I don't think what you want to do is technically possible, and it might help if you can focus on one platform for the time being. I'm not sure exactly which platforms do and do not support Flash, but I do know there are some that don't. For that reason alone using Flash probably isn't going to work for what you intend. You might be better off with a language like Javascript if you are looking for more universal/cross-platform support. I can't help but think you are accelerating full force into a block wall because you don't know what you are doing and are trying hard to fit a square peg into a round hole which ultimately will lead to failure. Re: [Audyssey] Happy Eid
Hi Shaun and all, Putting on my moderator hat for a moment. As far as the list rules are concerned we have never had any prohibitions against holiday well wishes, but however do discourage religious proselytizing. To clarify it is okay to wish someone a happy holiday, insert holiday name here, but it is not okay to preach sermons or share religious material with the list as we feel there are better places for that sort of thing. Hope that makes our stance on the subject clear. As far as talking about holiday events and cut-off periods I think that all depends on the topic at hand. If it is gaming related, has some aspect of gaming involved, of course I think it should last as long as necessary. However, if it is holiday well wishes etc those should be on or as near to the day in question and not begin too far or last too long after the holiday. We have better things to do than send and receive lots of happy holiday messages. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] any cheets for the game blood shed?
Hi Desiree , I think that was well said. I by no means use cheats very often, and when I do it is usually just to play the game in a different way. More in cases of when I am angry or just want to vent steam by going through hoards of enemies and mowing them down like weeds. I don't cheat for cheating sake so much as I just want to experience playing the game once and a while with invincibility enabled or be able to do something else not possible during a normal game. Re: [Audyssey] any cheets for the game blood shed?
Hi Charles, Maybe so, but there is more to cheating than just completing or winning a game. I do not usually use cheat codes when they are available, but when I do it is usually because I have already completed a game and want to play the game differently. Think of it as a way to unlock new and interesting content. For example, take the game Shades of Doom. There are many cheat codes available such as the ability to walk through walls, fast walking, invincible armor, unlimited ammo, and other nifty cheats. While that is indeed cheating winning the game isn't usually the point for me when I'm using those cheats. I merely want the experience and enjoyment of walking around the lab killing various monsters without them being able to harm my character. I'm just blowing off steam, going on a rampage, and winning the game is secondary to just splattering all the enemies on mass. Another case in point is a Star Wars game from the early 90's called Dark Forces. I use to play that game all the time, I actually beat it many times without cheats, so eventually I began using various cheat codes for the game. What made using cheats in that game so appealing was the funny things I could do. I could walk into a guard room, all the storm troopers would open fire, and the blaster bolts would just bounce off my character. I could then whip out a thermal detonator and blow up the entire room and not get damaged. Meanwhile all the poor storm troopers are laying dead everywhere. That kind of cheating is called god moding because it gives a player godlike powers, and it is simply a different way to experience the game than is usual. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] any cheets for the game blood shed?
Hi Charles, If you have never experienced playing certain games with cheat codes then you will probably never understand the appeal of why people use cheats. As I attempted to get across in a prior post for many it is not about competition, winning, or even playing the game per se. It is about exploring, perhaps being able to do things not ordinarily allowed by the game, and some people just get off in killing enemies for fun. For instance, take a simple unlimited ammo cheat. In most games you have a limited amount of ammo so can't just walk into a room and spray everyone and everything recklessly. You have to conserve ammo so have to take careful aim at what you are trying to kill or destroy. With an endless ammo cheat someone can walk into a room with many enemy targets and just hose everyone and everything down with fire and have fun shooting everything in sight just because they can. Now, if you are a person who doesn't like blowing lots of stuff up, killing unlimited numbers of enemy targets, or just taking out your built up emotions on a game then chances are you won't see the appeal of cheat codes. Since a lot of them are there for people who want to blow things up, shoot everything in sight, and do crazy stuff then you can't understand the attraction of cheat codes. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] any cheets for the game blood shed?
Hi Charles, It seems to me you have missed the point. The point is not always to win so to speak but to experience the game in a different way from the usual one. As it so happens comparing a game like Chess to say Shades of Doom is like comparing apples and oranges. There would be no fun or point in cheating at Chess unless someone was absolutely determined to win the game without putting the effort into it. However, with Shades of Doom I can imagine several cases where cheating would offer a number of motives above and beyond merely winning. Perhaps someone gets stuck on a certain area or level and wants to see the next one. Using a cheat code to get passed a difficult area of the game to get to the next level seems to me to be an acceptable use of a cheat since it allows him/her to move on without getting stuck. Another possible good use for a cheat is that certain enemies such as the blobs are often hard to get passed on certain difficulty settings. All one has to do is load his/her weapon with unlimited ammo and blow the blob away and then turn the cheat off. Yes, someone is cheating but they are doing so judiciously. The point here you are thinking very black and white about this issue looking at this as a what if situation where you enter a Chess competition with cheating on your mind where as I doubt most people who use cheat codes think of using them in that way. I'd say most would use cheats to get passed a difficult level or difficult enemy and only use them in certain types of games and circumstances. Not in every case is winning the objective or ultimate goal. For most having a good time or just having fun is paramount. On 9/8/15, Charles Rivardwrote: > What's the fun of always winning by cheating? Re: [Audyssey] any cheets for the game blood shed?
Hi John, Exactly. Sometimes cheat codes lets you have fun without offering a lot of unnecessary restrictions. For example, if anyone remembers the game Jedi Knight from the early to mid 90's it was a case in point. In order to get and use Jedi powers you had to complete certain quests, certain levels, and after each one you could add stars to a selection of Force powers such as: Force jump, push, pull, lightning, etc. There were of course cheat codes that would give you every Force power and max them out so you could essentially start the game as a full fledged Jedi master rather than a Jedi apprentice. While it made the game easier to play it allowed you to make different choices and to do things that just weren't possible without the cheats. It was fun and rewarding in a different way. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] errors when playing games
Hi Dacia, As for Freedom Wheel of Fortune there is really nothing you can do to fix that runtime error. A lot of people get that error and it is something wrong with the program itself. So nothing can be done. I suggest if you like Wheel of Fortune games try X-Wheel by X-Sight Entertainment which is a much better game. As for your problem with the Kitchen's Inc games that is because you installed the game to the wrong directory. On Windows 8.1 there are two Program Files directories. One for 64-bit programs, C:\Program files, and one for older 32-bit programs, C:\Program Files (x86). To fix the problem simply cut and paste the files in C:\Program Files\Kitchensinc into C:\Program Files (x86)\Kitchensinc and the problem will be fixed. Cheers! Hi Kenny, When you create a new park you actually begin with an empty pitch. There are no rides etc by default. As for how many rides etc to add that is entirely personal. There is no right or wrong answer how many rides to add the first couple of weeks of production. I generally go to the bank multiple times to take out lone's, and build as much stuff as I can in order to get the park up and operational as soon as possible. Of course, that means I have to spend several weeks of game time to pay off those lone's. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Help needed with Castaways
Hi Lori, Well, I generally place my garde towers pretty far away from my settlement that way if goblins come all the fighting is as far away from my settlement as possible. I generally place my settlement in the center of the map, or as centered as possible, and then my guard towers are at least four or five squares away from my nearest building that way it gives me a bit of open area for fighting and to use as a buffer between my settlement and the goblin raiders. Re: [Audyssey] Help needed with Castaways
Hi, I totally agree with what Dark is saying here. A lot of problems with Castaways can be solved by not being too static. As he says a lot of times you don't need a doctor so rather than have him or her standing around get the doctor out to do food deliveries, go hunting, chop lumber, or something else useful. Thinking that this person only has one job can get your entire settlement killed because you aren't making use of all of your human resources. A lot of what makes you an effective Castaways player is being able to assign and reassign people to different tasks as needed rather than just giving each person a task and letting them stand around waiting for work. Cheers! On 8/22/15, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Lori. On the first couple of maps, goblins will always come from the top and sides, so it's better to place your buildings at the middle bottom and if you want to use towers, put them towards the edges, walls aren't needed just for goblins they come into play later on. To be honest though if your stratogy of making soldiers and knights is good enough you shouldn't need towers. Myself, the stratogy I always play to is to start with a view to creating knights. So I first build the tavern and storehouse next to each other, the lumber yard on the closest bit of forest and the stone quarry on the nearest bit of stone. I usually begin with meat and vegitable production and houses, and don't worry about bread until I've got more population, and because mining takes time I build the mine and smithy early so that I can start making knights. the important thing with castaways however I've found is not to be static. You want to build a building? wEll reassign all your people (bar the cook), to builder. You only need a doctor when someone is actually injured, and sinse the doctor's secondary job of tailer isn't useful until you have yarn to weave into cloth, there is no point having her/him stand around idle. You don't need a miner metalergist and a smith, just two out of three usually will do sinse the smith can smelt and the metaligerist can mine. Unless you need wood in a hurry, a carpenter can moonlight as a lumberjack. This is one reason I love castaways, it's all about changing your stratogy and assignments according to what your doing, and if you can do this to maximize your population you can hae more than enough soldiers and knights to keep the goblins in check, so long as your not building really close to the edge of the map. hth. dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Help needed with Castaways
Hi Lori, It sounds to me as though your principle problem with the goblins is poor judgment. Generally speaking you want to mount your defenses far away from your store houses, and other production facilities so that your fighters can attend to the goblins outside of your town proper. If you are building your towers, walls, etc inside your town its too close as the goblins can storm and over run your defenses and do serious damage before they can be stopped. Think of walls, towers, etc as your first line of defense, a shield as it were, and you want to put that on your outer perimeter of your territory to keep the goblins as far away from your buildings for as long as possible. Re: [Audyssey] Help needed with Castaways
Hi Lori, There are a number of things that could be wrong here since Castaways is pretty dependant on several factors. However, the first one that comes to mind is to make sure you have plenty of peasants to do menial labor. The peasants are important because they will go out and harvest your fields, deliver bread from your bakeries, go get meat from the butcher's shop, and other things so your cook can actually cook it. If you don't have enough peasants your people will starve just because nobody is delivering food to the tavern. Cheers! Hi Damien, I see where you are going with this, but unfortunately the terms of the license agreement really prohibits free redistribution of the key generator for the BSC titles. While I'd like to agree with you on a personal level as a gamer, but as a list administrator I can't legally allow people to redistribute that key generator given its legal status. So My suggestion is to simply ignore all of the paid BSC titles given their legally in limbo. I say we either give full availability to the product where such availability has been granted, or don't host any kind of paid material at all if it can no longer be purchased. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Josh, You are comparing apples to oranges here. The Vocalizer Add-on and Leasey are completely two different types of programs, are supported differently by NVDA, thus is a poor comparison. Let me explain. With Leasey it is written to be a screen reader add-on. It directly interfaces with the screen reader, and is written in the screen reader's own scripting language. Thus it is subject to the same type of license of the screen reader it is written for. In the case of NVDA that would be the GPL which means it couldn't be closed source. The Vocalizer voices are not a part of NVDA. They are a completely separate entity legally and technically so of course can be closed source. The only connection they have to NVDA is the Vocalizer drivers, which by the way are open source, and are in keeping with the NVDA license agreement. So you see if the add-on is a module for NVDA it has to be open source. If it is a separate program that works independent of NVDA it can be closed source. Hello Ari, Correct. Leasey is completely closed source and NVDA is licence under the GPL which requires most things to be open source and to really do what Leasey does it would have to be open source. I thought any interested parties should read this. -- Forwarded message -- From: Joshua Griffith webmas...@jgriffith.com Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2015 06:21:26 -0500 Subject: Jim Kitchens games To: gamers-ow...@audyssey.org Just wanted to drop you a note regarding Kitchensinc.net. I've noticed a spike in the download usage on the Kitchensinc.net website, so just to clarify this for those downloading his games with the expectation that they will no longer be available to download. I will not be removing Jims site from my hosting package. His site will remain intact and his games will remain available, and free to download for many years to come. Hi Dark, I would suppose submissions could be sent to the webmaster, Joshua Griffith, and he could add them to the Kitchensinc.net site. On 8/10/15, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: That is extremely good to know and I'm very glad of that fact. As I said on audiogames.net, With the amount of people grabbing up jim's games ad wanting to host them, it is more likely they will be seen everywhere! than not available anywhere, however I do like the thought of people not just being able to play jim's games but reading the descriptions of them that he wrote before they download them. Just one question. It is possible that people will create more golf courses, trivia question files or monopoly board configurations in the future, (off and on I've been working on a Doctor Who trivia set). It'd be nice if these could also be added to Jim's site, though if not they could of course be hosted elsewhere. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Dark, I believe your Windows analogy is pretty close a comparison as we can get. Not exactly the same situation, but close enough for comparison that the concepts carry over. As you said Leasy costs no more than it ever has and I believe Brian has purchased Q9 to include in Leasey as a sort of freebie the way the Windows games are for Windows users. Although, I believe a standard Windows DVD costs like $125 nobody can accuse Microsoft of essentially charging $125 for Solitaire, Hearts, Minesweeper, and their other games simply because they are considered by Microsoft as add-ons or freebies included with the Windows package as a whole. From their perspective you are not so much buying those games as you are buying an operating system complete with multiple programs such as media players, text editors, games, web browsers, etc. To accuse them of selling games for $125 wouldn't make sense from their point of view. Leasey seems to be a similar situation. Brian sees, rightly or wrongly, Q9 as being another nifty add-on to Leasey. He does not see it as selling a game since he is selling a bunch of scripts as well as a package or suite of programs to the end user. You buy one you get all, and thus he sees it as a package deal even though the majority of gamers just want the game itself. The only thing I can think of that is sort of similar to this situation is Internet Explorer. Long ago, we are talking the early 1990's, Internet Explorer use to be a stand alone program. A person went out and purchased a computer with say MS Dos 6.2 and Windows 3.1 on it, and had to buy Internet Explorer separate if they wanted it. When Windows 95 came out Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer as part of the Windows 95 release, and stopped selling Internet Explorer to Windows 3.1 customers. Unfair some might say, but from Microsoft's point of view they were giving it away for free now that it was bundled in their latest operating system rather than sold separately. Some 20 years later nobody cares because it has for the most part all been forgotten about, and I suspect there are many on this very list that have never used anything prior to Windows 95 so don't know or remember the days when Internet Explorer was not a freebie. I said all that to make the point that Brian is undoubtedly viewing Q9 as some freebie, an add-on, to his Leasey package and does not consider the money he is losing by not selling it separately. I suspect that he purchased it with the soul aim of boosting sales of Leasey, of having exclusive content, that can only be gotten by getting Leasey. While that is rotten, unfair, sucks, I can remember similar cases where companies like Microsoft have done the same sort of thing but people have forgotten about it. Leasey customers are unlikely to know or care that Q9 was once sold separately and over time the people who know and remember that will slowly fade. Even if they don't they have no control over the situation so at this point I consider the matter a mute point since nobody here can make a difference. Cheers! On 8/10/15, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Josh. I've heard this arguement that the game is now worth 200 usd before, but that is just looking at it from one perspective. From Brian Hartgen's point of view he has bought Q9 to essentially be a bonus. It's like the solitare and other games that comes with windows. It would be foolish to say that microsoft are selling a solitare game for $300 (or however much a windows install costs these days), it's that microsoft are selling windows as the main operating system and solitare, pinball, spades etc come as a freee extra. That is how I believe Brian Hartgen is viewing Q9. he sells Leasy for 200 usd which is the same price he's always sold it for, and people get a fun little game as a look at this freebee! item. The problem though is Q9 is not like solitare. it's not just a fun little time waster, it is a well crafted game that has had significant work put into it, which is exactly why I accuse Brian of devaluing what he has bought, indeed while I hold Philip generally blaimeless in the matter, I am extremely sorry that Philip didn't sell the rights to the game to another, more responsable person who recognized the worth of what they had rather than thinking oh game, worth not much, I'll throw it in for free I'm also dissappointed that this moron Brian, even though he clearly did not know the value of what he had didn't change his thinking once he recieved so many complaints. Whether he is hoping people will buy leasy just for the game, or whether (as I personally believe is more likely), he is sticking to his guns just to be bloody minded after recieving lots of cryticism becuase he assumes he knows best I can't say. Either way it clearly shows me that he's not just ignorant of games but ignorant of good business if once he gets something which people planely want to buy, he refuses to sell it individually. As

Hi Darren, I had not heard this. Can you give me more details on this installer project? I'm interested to know if the person is using a qualified installation tool like Inno Setup, Microsoft Setup Installer, or just repacking the games using Winzip Self-Extractor like Jim did. Moreover I'm not sure creating a single mega installer is a good idea. I can understand why someone might want all the games to get installed at once, but I do think it should be broken down into individual games or perhaps separate packages such as the sports pack containing sports games, the board game pack containing board games, etc. There are ways of making the installation process more selective than just making everyone install everything at one go. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Mattias, While Philip may be a Jaws user I don't think this situation with Q9 has arisen because he is a Jaws lover. I don't think that had anything to do with it. As Philip explained on the Audiogames.net Forum it was a simple business arrangement where Brian Hartgen offered him an unspecified amount of money to buy the rights to Q9 and Philip sold the game to him. Being a Jaws lover had nothing to do with it. If you had said Brian Hartgen was a Jaws lover I might have agreed with you. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Matthias, True, but that is not directly Philip's fault. He sold it to Brian Hartgen who is the one that has locked Q9 to Jaws and Leasey. There is a difference here in who is to blame for the unfortunate state of affairs. I'm puzzled as to why you continue to blame Philip when he no longer owns the game any more and all this grief is being caused by the new owner. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Shaun, That's a bit obvious. No one is complaining about Q9 but the way the transfer was handled and the way Brian Hartgen has decided to distribute the game now that he has it. The point in my message you responded to is that if people don't like the new distribution policy that the game could be cloned, a new version developed, without the Leasey and Jaws restrictions. Obviously the clone would not be the same as the original due to copyrights but something very similar could be developed if that were something someone wanted to do. I'm not sure I like the game quite that much to rewrite it myself though. A lot of the elements in Q9 are pretty generic. We have a forest level, cave level, mountain level, and so forth. The enemies are gorillas, bats, rhinos, leopards, and wolves. Weapons are mainly a club and a slingshot. Point being that stuff is so common and generic that it is not copyrightable. The only things that are copyrightable is the sounds, music, and the little alien Q9 himself. If we created a game using a caveman doing the same things the game play could be identical to Q9 and not be considered copyright infringement. Make sense? On 8/8/15, Shaun Everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote: Heck I don't think q9 was the issue. for its time q9 rocked. I don't know if I'd buy q9 again or a game like it. I don't think people care that its sold but to someone that needs jaws and well has a package which is quite expensive and way over the origional game price is the problem and that it happened in a sudden fashion. Re: [Audyssey] jim kitchen passes away:
Hi Shaun, That hardly seems necessary, but you can do whatever you think is right. I have a feeling Jeremy is correct when he said there is no danger of Jim's games becoming unavailable because very quickly there will be 40 different sites where one can download his stuff from because everyone seems to have the same idea and is sharing them on Dropbox, Sendspace, and on private sites. While that is not a bad idea in of itself I do have some reservation about no organization or central control over the games and that means people will only offer what they want to offer and may leave out whatever they feel is not necessary or change things without the others knowing about it. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Bryan, True. Not every developer does use the same programming language and/or platform. That said, there are ways around that problem if the developers really and truly want to work together to develop something decent. As with every collaboration project there would be a bit of give and take, and some developers would have to bone up on another language and tools which isn't that bad all things considered. An experienced developer such as myself can grab a Teach Yourself X in 24-Hours type book, read it, and be up and running in a new language in a week or so. The reason being after one gets passed the unique syntax and specific language fundamentals its the same as everything else. A variable is a variable, a class is a class, a function is a function, and if one knows how to program in one or more languages already learning a new one is a piece of cake. So a collaboration isn't totally out of the question. It is just that someone might have to be willing to give up on one language and tools to use whatever the group is using. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Dark, Oh, definitely agree. I've actually been doing some thinking and I think what would be cool is a modern remake or clone of Tarzan Junior since presumably Philip still holds the rights and it would be easy to get permission to rewrite TJ. Reason being it could be designed to use similar elements of Q9 but have a much more indepth and better side-scroller of Tarzan Junior. A lot of the elements that made Q9 as good as it was could be carried over to the new side-scroller and Brian Fartgen would have nothing to say about it. Cheers! On 8/10/15, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. Well yes Q9 has the fairly standard environments, weapons and gameplay, but as I said it's the design here that matters. This is actually why I'd be interested if one of our more established and experienced developers worked on some sort of side scroller sinse funnily enough while a few have been developed I've not seen any quite as well put together as Q9 for quite some time. Adventure at C: for example has a lot of good points, the rpg stats system and mod creation of new levels not the leased, not to mention challenges etc, but there are still portions that turn into a button masher. About Psycho strike I don't know, though various other attempts like Battlezone or scrolling battles have been rather rough around the edges I think mostly because people assume that creating enemies everywhere and having the player hammer the buttons is what makes a good game rather than messing with the enemy properties. Adventure to fate Project Alpha is extremely atmospheric and has some interesting challenges, but is fundamentally a very different game from something like Q9, closer to a side scroller adventure title, and while combat is very very quick in the birsts it occurs, it's the story and obstacles that make the difference. Angel gift is nothing short of amazing! from it's sound design to it's intelligent enemies, but it's fundamentally a short game, and given the massive and epic amount of sound work I'm not really surprised. So, oddly enough generic as Q9 is, it's been a hell of a long time sinse someone made something like it, much less something very very well designed, indeed the only game we've had that I can really compare it to is Superliam, and of course a game that has maze elements with going up and down on ladders etc the way Deathmatch project alpha currently does and the way the various montizuma games did is still in short supply side scroller wise. Hi Shaun, I'm all for the idea of a Q9 clone. A developer, whoever that would be, could create something like Q9 and either sell it or give it away legally. Hi Charles, A comment about your comment. There is a lot more to the legalization of illegal drugs than just everyone is doing it. Some studies have shown that countries like Portugal which have relaxed their drug policies have a less of a drug problem per person than countries that have really strict drug policies. I know that sounds contrary, but relaxing drug policies, legalizing drugs, has had the opposite effect than that which people usually think. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Shaun, We have a strict no piracy rule here on Audyssey so yes the mods do mind. While I am upset with how Q9 was handled that doesn't mean I'll relax the rule about sharing the keys on this or any other list I run because it is piracy. Just because I think Mr. Hartgen is being a bit of a jerk doesn't mean I would publicly disrespect his right to sell the game by allowing people to share keys etc on list. Of course, what people do off the list is none of my business and while I can't legally encourage people to crack the game I am in no position to discourage it either. P.S. Please, stop referring people to my comments on Audiogames.net. Much of what I said there was heat of the moment and while not anything I can't live with I don't appreciate being referred to as though those comments are representative of how I feel now. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Dark, I agree with all your points. Although, Q9 is a simple side-scroller it was well thought out and well designed from a development standpoint. It had good game mechanics, good music, good sounds, a bit of light humor, and a lot of beginners just aren't quite able to deliver that quality. The reason it was such a good game is that Philip wasn't a newbie, had in fact developed other games before, and thus had more skill and experience than your average newbie. Plus he was willing to put more money into the project thus was able to buy high quality sounds and music. Q9 is an example of what can be done with experience and a bit of money on a developer's side. As for my surprise when it was released that was because I have played all kinds of arcade games from the 80's and Q9 reminded me a lot of what was available 30 years ago, and that is not a bad thing. Although simple Q9 played quite a bit like classic arcade games such as Pitfall, and that made it special and unique since I have not found many audio games that reminds me so much of mainstream games. It is not easy to capture that nostalgia and exact feeling of yesteryear and Q9 did it for me. On 8/8/15, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. In light of this debate, I did go and play Q9, and one thing struck me. Lots of people have tried! to develop games like Q9 but not many have been as successful, look at games like Battle Zone, indeed I would say that these are probably the most common type of audiogames people first try to make with Bgt and I've seen plenty of practice games and works in progress over on the audiogames.net forum that have employed the same idea. Yes, the 1D side scroller concept is very simple, but Q9 executed it particularly well, with the properties of how the attacks and enemies worked, the great sound and music, and Philip's extremely funny acting. Could someone create a similar game in the future? very probably, however the number of people who have tried and not quite succeeded makes me think that there was a lot more care and craftsmanship in Q9 than the phrase simple side scroller would imply, which is precisely why it's sad that in future the game's availability will be so restricted thanks to one person's greed. As I said previously, it's the very disrespect to Philip's great work on Q9 essentially turning a stand alone game into just an extra freeby for people who buy a very specific software package that gets up my nose, and I'm sorry that Philip didn't sell the rights to his game to someone more perceptive. There really isn't much else to add to the hating on Greasy and it's developer that has not been said, my point however is that even a simple side scroller like Q9 requires quite some design, and Q9 had that design. ? For example, enemy movement speed. I loved the points in Q9 when you'd be fighting wolves in the cave but then have a bear coming to get you. The bear moved slowly, but you couldn't generally inflict damage on it without it damaging you first, you thus had to coordinate your quick attacks against the wolves, the encroaching bear, and any bats in the area. Thus, even though Q9 was a side scroller with not much by way of enemey attack properties to play with, it still required you to judge a number of factors together, not just hear, react and hit as quickly as possible, not to mention preserving amo. Whether the most recent entry in the side scroller category, Psycho strike has this level of design I don't know sinse I'm still waiting for the Xp issue to be fixed with the game in order to try it, but undoubtedly it's the design that went into Q9 that made it such a major release. Indeed I remember at the time it was released five years ago that you yourself Tom said well it's surprising how many people are enjoying such a simple arcade style game All the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home
Hi Bryan, Maybe so but the fact of the matter is I get the feeling this deal went down rather suddenly. I don't know what if any influence Philip had over distribution of Q9 when Brian Hartgen took control of the product, and I'm not sure he really cared about new sales that much. The only condition I know of is that Hartgen support those who already have keys which makes sense. As far as new sales goes I think Philip was thinking that well had run dry as he hadn't gotten any sales for a long time before this deal went down so probably wasn't thinking there would be an angry mob of people wanting to buy the game on mass. Cheers! On 8/8/15, Bryan Peterson bpeterson2...@cableone.net wrote: Correction. It's Brian Hartgen. Personally if it had been my product I would have set certain conditions before agreeing to the sale. Well one at any rate, and that would have been that the game also needed to be available as a standalone for those who couldn't or didn't want to spend a hundred or more dollars for the entire package.
