Hey Gang,

My print screen key is where the application key should be on this Lenovo
keyboard, so I keep on hitting it.

My question is where do I go to delete all the pictures of the screen I
took, or does it matter?

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 10, and Jaws 18.

Thanks for any help.

This is definitely on topic for this list. To get system information for
your computer including whether it is 32 or 64 bit, press Windows key-Pause
and use the JAWS cursor to read the information. The Pause key is the top
right-most key on your keyboard above the numpad.

There's always a problem it seems.

I'm curious? How many sites or applications do JAWS users encounter
that require JAVA? I know there a lot of on-line gaming sites that
need it to run their plug-ins. For your own needs is it really worth
the risks? I mean if Google has taken steps to stop certain programs
from appearing on their search engine, there must be a serious
problem. Believe other well known sites have also followed suit.

I would just avoid installing them completely, unless I had full
flexibility to enable them on a site by site basis. That's what using
FireFox will give you. That's why I have Adobe Flash installed only
on FireFox. Some important sites I use haven't switched their web
players to the new HTML 5 format, thus I have to use Adobe Flash to
access their content.

The important, relatively recent development is that screenreader users no
longer need to install JAWS Access Bridge in order for them to work with

Hi Adrian,

Well, my 1st install was from, Ninite, but after enabling the Access Bridge
I got an error message, & also after rebooting. Come to find out, the
Ninite installer installed both 32 & 64 bit versions. So, I uninstalled
them both, made sure all Oracle / Java folders were gone from everywhere I
could think of, cleaned my system with CCleaner, & finally reinstalled with
an installer I got from Oracle's website. I enabled the Access Bridge, no
error messages, rebooted, & no error messages, so I think we gotter whipped.
Thanks much.

You're absolutely correct. Both JAVA and Adobe Flash are on
everyone's hit list for having way too many security vulnerabilities.
It's best you avoid installing them. You get more flexibility
installing Adobe Flash on FireFox for you can enable it's use on a
site by site basis. They may have the same option for JAVA.

[JAWS-Users] java and jaws

2017-04-14 Thread Judy
Hi, everyone, I enjoyed reading the info about Java. I always thought it was
necessary to keep it up because of how they are doing websites these days,
but now Hans says that it isn't and I am confused. Could someone please
update me on Java, what it now does and what is necessary? When I wrote that
post about a certain site jumping around I was wondering if it had anything
to do with Java not being updated, but maybe that's not the case anymore.
Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

longer need to install JAWS Access Bridge in order for them to work with

Hey Gang,

My print screen key is where the application key should be on this Lenovo

My question is where do I go to delete all the pictures of the screen I

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 10, and Jaws 18.

I am on an online community forum and a project is to have a print book put
into audio format. Many people are reading different chapters of the book so
the audio files may be different. The book is being put into audio format
because there is not presently a audio version of it to be had. However, the
audio files would be shared among sighted and visually impaired/blind
persons alike.

So far the only idea is to have a Dropbox account and share the folder but
then some people may not have or want a Dropbox account.

I would like to know if there is any alternative to Dropbox to share a
folder/files with others so others can listen to the book and it also be
accessible for those with vision loss.

If I need to clarify anything please let me know and I'll do my best.

Hello Adrian,

Yes, you are quite right! I didn't realize that when in the navigation pane
pressing spacebar still goes result to result and JAWS speaks the found
result. It seems to me that at one time using the navigation pane to find
text didn't work very well and most people were making the change I
mentioned. Also, I think at that time a person did have to use F6 and shift
with f6 but not now. The escape key also now takes focus back into the
document pane. Also, the JAWS find is a great alternative. For some
reason, I thought it was limited to only search what is shown on the screen
at a given time. This isn't the case either. Changing the CTRL F to apply
to the EditFind command isn't really necessary any more. Thanks for
pointing these things out.

Take care.

Brian,

This is useful information, as always, but it does seem a bit complicated.
When I do a control-f search, JAWS reads the current line as soon as the
result is found. It's critical not to press any key until JAWS has
verbalized that line, or else JAWS gives only the option to search for the
next result, with an indication of the total number of results for that
search in the document.

Having heard the line of text, I have two options. Either I press the
spacebar to move to the next result or press escape to go to re-read and
possibly edit the text. As you explain, the control-f search doesn't land
you directly in the text field.

If I elected to stop the search to check that text but then decide to
continue searching for that same item, I press control-f again. The same
search term is still there, so I just press enter. I'm taken to the next
instance of that search term. Once again, the current line of text is
verbalized, and I have the same two choices: press escape to go into the
text or press spacebar to resume searching.

The alternative, of course, is a JAWS find, adding the JAWS key to
control-f. In this case, JAWS stays in the text when it finds a result, so
you can edit right away. To resume searching for the same term, press JAWS
key-F3.

Each type of search, Microsoft's and JAWS's, has advantages.

I'm afraid this doesn't address John's concern that the escape key no longer
cancels his search operations. I don't have an answer for that.

I'm using Office 2010, JAWS 18 (last but one release) and Win7.

Hello John,

It is really best to work in print view when using Word. Keystrokes such as
Alt key with delete report the distance in inches between the cursor
position and the edge of the paper. As you tab you also hear the distance
from the left edge of the paper. When JAWS says that the cursor is one inch
from the left, this indicates there is a one-inch margin. Working in print
view gives you a lot better understanding of how your document will appear
when printed.

In Word 2010, CTRL with F does not perform the traditional Find command and
take focus into the Find tab of the Find and Replace dialog box. CTRL with
F takes focus into the navigation pane. You can do a search in the
navigation pane and use the next button to go from result to result but to
get into the document to read the result you need to use shift key with F6.
After reviewing the result you can use F6 to go back into the navigation
pane and use the Next button again. In order to return the CTRL with F to
launching the Find and Replace dialog box you need to apply the keystroke to
the Editfind command.

1. Press Alt F to display the File tab of the ribbon.
2. Press Alt T to display Word Options.
3. Use down arrow key in the categories of options until you get to
Customize Ribbon.
4. Tab until you find the Customize button and use spacebar.
5. In the Categories list move focus to the Home Tab.
6. In the Commands list locate EditFind. You can press the letter E
and then use down arrow until you get to it. Press enter key.
7. Use the tab key to the Press New Shortcut Key box.
8. Press CTRL+F. A message in the box shows that the keystroke is
being used for a different command.
9. Tab to and press spacebar

Re: [JAWS-Users] Print view in MS word

2017-04-14 Thread Nate Kile
Hello, the print view is still standard for us. Escape should still take you
out from the find dialog, if not, try Alt/space bar and then arrow down to
close, or press the letter C for close. If alt/space bar does not bring up
that menu, try control/space bar and press C. I am not sure why escape is
not working for you, that is strange.

Running windows 10, Office 2010 and latest jaws 18 on a Toshiba laptop:

1. When I bring up a Word document, jaws announces the name of the document
and at the end says "print view"

Do we want to have documents in print view? Seems like there was a setting
in options to change this by checking or unchecking a check box with the
space bar. Unless I am remembering incorrectly, seems like print view had
some issues and we were advised to not use print view.

2. When I bring up the find dialogue with Control key plus letter F, after I
have done my search, I cannot get the dialogue to close so I can reload the
Find command to look for something else in the Word document. My sighted
wife says she has to click an X next to the name being searched to close the
find dialogue. Seems like we used to be able to use the "escape key" to
dismiss the find dialogue.

Thanks for any help.

John

That said, I have no problem using the Jaws find command of jaws key plus
control key and letter f.

Has the operation of the find function been changed? I used to use office
2003.

Yes, that is all you have to do. And, if you have your machine to connect to

List, having a couple of issues,

2003.

The first thing you have to do is go to your brother in laws house and ask

My experience is that once you start the process, it does everything itself.
At the end you start Narrator for the finishing touches until you land on

Hi listers, I am experiencing a strange issue windows 8.1 64 JAWS 16.
When the computer boots up, everything works fine, but after it runs for
awhile (an hour aprox), some of the rightside keys start behaving weird.
E.g, the right alt key gets stuck to the control, so if I try to perform an
action with that key, it activates the ctrl +alt function.
The comma (,) and period (.) and question (?) and apostrophy (‘) along with
some of the other keys JAWS says some strange symbols I have no idea what
they are.
This happens in browsers, notepad, ms word and the regular windows apps.
I checked the keyboard settings and haven’t noticed anything out of the
ordinary, and as I said, when the computer boots everything works fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I'm sure you're right about the changes you describe here because, for a long

Hello Adrian,

Yes, you are quite right! I didn't realize that when in the navigation pane
pressing spacebar still goes result to result and JAWS speaks the found result.
It seems to me that at one time using the navigation pane to find text didn't
work very well and most people were making the change I mentioned. Also, I
think at that time a person did have to use F6 and shift with f6 but not now.
The escape key also now takes focus back into the document pane. Also, the
JAWS find is a great alternative. For some reason, I thought it was limited to
only search what is shown on the screen at a given time. This isn't the case
either. Changing the CTRL F to apply to the EditFind command isn't really
necessary any more. Thanks for
pointing these things out.

Brian,

This is useful information, as always, but it does seem a bit complicated.
When I do a control-f search, JAWS reads the current line as soon as the result
is found. It's critical not to press any key until JAWS has verbalized that
line, or else JAWS gives only the option to search for the next result, with an
indication of the total number of results for that search in the document.

Having heard the line of text, I have two options. Either I press the spacebar
to move to the next result or press escape to go to re-read and possibly edit
the text. As you explain, the control-f search doesn't land you directly in the
text field.

If I elected to stop the search to check that text but then decide to continue
searching for that same item, I press control-f again. The same search term is
still there, so I just press enter. I'm taken to the next instance of that
search term. Once again, the current line of text is verbalized, and I have the
same two choices: press escape to go into the text or press spacebar to resume
searching.

The alternative, of course, is a JAWS find, adding the JAWS key to control-f.
In this case, JAWS stays in the text when it finds a result, so you can edit
right away. To resume searching for the same term, press JAWS key-F3.

Keystrokes such as
Alt key with delete report the distance in inches between the cursor position
and the edge of the paper. As you tab you also hear the distance from the left
edge of the paper. When JAWS says that the cursor is one inch from the left,
this indicates there is a one-inch margin. Working in print view gives you a
lot better understanding of how your document will appear when printed.

In Word 2010, CTRL with F does not perform the traditional Find command and

document to read the result you need to use shift key with F6.
After reviewing the result you can use F6 to go back into the navigation pane
and use the Next button again. In order to return the CTRL with F to launching
the Find and Replace dialog box you need to apply the keystroke to
