[lace] Lace events in Spain
Hello all, In Spain there are also many lace events going on, especially during the summer time. For example, tomorrow I am driving to the North West (Galicia) to attend the III Congress of Lace and Textiles, which will be held in Orense. I will attend a course of Freehand Lace, by Marianne Stang, who has been studying this kind of lace for a long time and is a real expert. There will be other well known national and international lacers teaching and speaking. One whole week full of lace. Have a look at their blog: click on the top, at the right side of the page, to read about the Congress. And.. bear in mind that, what you are going to read is not Spanish, but Galician, the language they speak in that part of Spain. Hope you find this interesting. [lace] Lace experience in Finland
Hello all Arachneans. It seems that Laurie and me had the same idea in different places of the world! I have just created a blog where I want to include information on places where lace is made. In fact, the blog is intended for Spanish lacers, who have very little information of this kind in Spanish. But, not wanting to let you out of this, I have made an English version. The first article is about my visit to Rauma a few weeks ago. Another one about my visit to Eeva Liisa Kortelahti will follow soon. Thank you very much to Outi and Pene, who gave me a lot of advice about what to see in Finland! Hope you like the article. Re: [lace] Nanduti
So interesting, Lorelei! This summer I have been learning how to make Teneriffe lace, with the book by Alex Stillwell. The difference between both is that Teneriffe is made on a little pillow and is usually white, whereas ñanduti is made on fabric and is colourful. Making this lace has been for me a kind of relax of bobbin lace activity. Sometimes it is nice to make something that goes fast! Re: [lace] Unusual Torah binder (bobbin lace)
Hello all, I have been looking at the book Carolina mentions, and what she calls flowers are kind of dots or round motifs, with pairs entering and going out... And these round motifs are repeated all through the lace. At a first sight, I couldn't see anything repeated on the lace, and I thought it was quite chaotic. But... looking carefully, we can see round dots in half stitch, round dots in cloth st., with a ring around the cloth st. area, and then we also see little stripes of tapes, crossing each other in some places... In my opinion, this is freehand lace. It has an irregular look, which possibly means there was no pattern underneath. Hope to have contributed a little. Re: [lace] seeking help with Brigitte Bellon pattern
As far as I can see in the picture of the shawl, once she has finished the rose ground (don't forget to cross the last pairs to close the little square that forms the rose ground) she has to make a narrow trail of half stitch. This narrow trail borders the rose ground area, and the tricky part is the corner. As this narrow trail is worked with only 3 pairs (one being the weaver), you must change the direction of the weaver in the angle, working two times in the center, to make both trails look the same. The text in the book doesn't help much: it says that the trail is made in half stitch, and that the ending of the shawl is made with a braid. Hope this helps... Re: [lace] Kortelahti Pattern
Hi Miriam, I would say you have to work it all in one. First you have to join section 1 and 2 (to form one triangle of the hexagon) and make 6 copies of this triangle. Once you join the 6 parts, you get the complete pattern. If you look at the picture of the finished lace, you don't see a joining of two patterns. To start, follow the indications of the little numbers. Where there is a little circle with no number, it seems to me you have to add one pair. Where it says 2, 2 pairs, and where 3, 3pairs. The patterns of Kortelahti are quite autoexplicative. Where you have two lines it means a braid is made. Sometimes you have three little lines: that means a braid with three pairs. One line is just one pair. Hope this help... Best regards. Re: [lace] re: lace photos (red prickings)
In most parts of Spain red was the colour used for prickings. And continues being. In other parts of Spain, yellow has been used, also green. Nowadays, it seems that most lacers continue using red or orange. But I myself use blue, as I find it more relaxing for my eyes. I started using blue after a German lacer told me. I suppose that, at the very beginning, lacers didn't think so much whether the chosen colour was good for their eyes or not. They used some natural product they had at hand to dye the cardboard. It's just a guessing... Regards from a Spanish lacer, Antje González - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Brass fan frame
Hi Dot, The frame is amazingly beautiful. I would make a lace fan and put it between two pieces of glass (cut to size and shape) as it seems to me that there is enough space for it at the back of the frame. The difficult part will be to find a pattern that matches the space. You will probably have to make an adaptation of an existing one. Or design it yourself... which I consider much more difficult. This is my suggestion. Hope you have many more. Re: [lace] free lace books
Hi Jenny and interested Arachneans, It is interesting to know that the patterns of this book from Galicia are free to download. And that the book is a recopilation of patterns from the area of Galicia, a very famous area for its laces. They are mostly torchon and guipur types, and intended to be made with a coarse thread (Finca 20 or 30, for example). In this book the typical laces have been collected and redrawn with a computer, giving the possibility to make an edging, an insert, a little piece... with the same model. The intention of this book is letting everybody know the lace that is made there. I hope you all enjoy it. Re: [lace] lace photos
Hello all, As a Spanish lacer, I also want to make my small contribution to this discussion. Apart from what Carolina has said, there is also a tendency in Spain to take a pattern or design (which here normally has no instructions on how to make it), and work it in a free manner. So, you cannot trust, in fact, if this is a lace from here or there. The flower motif reminds me of the laces made in Almagro (Ciudad Real), a very important lace center in Spain. But.. neither the Brussels ground nor the outside picots are made in this region. So, I would say this hanky of picasa is a personal interpretation of a pattern. Re: [lace] making randa from OIDFA bulletin nbr 1 2011
Hello Gon, I have got in touch with the author of the article in the OIDFA bulletin to find out how wide the randa is. I think she has used old linen to make it. I will tell you as soon as she answers me. Randa is a term used in some parts of Spain to describe a type edging. In fact, the word comes from told times, and has a German origin (RAND=border or edging). When we talk of randas in Spain, we think of these laces made without a pattern (freehand) from the Pyrenees or also of some laces made in Catalonia. Re: [lace] Hinojosa
I got in touch with Hinojosa Lace thanks to Carolina's pattern books. I didn't know Carolina then, and met her through Arachne. That was many years ago.. perhaps 10? Carolina learned to make this type of lace from one of the few women that still knew how to make it in those times. Because this lace has been unknown, as it was also only made in some small parts of Spain, and unknown in the rest of the country. Carolina is one the first lacers who started to design her own patterns based on this technique and offer them on sale. And I must say they are all very beautiful. I must also say that old patterns were not available anywhere then, because the owners kept them jealously. So, Carolina´s patterns were in fact the only way to work this lace during a whole decade. At the same time, in another part of Spain, Mariña Regueiro, also fascinated by this lace, which she happened to see for the first time in 1984, started to make a deep research, searching for its roots. And the book Jacqui mentions is the result of many years of investigating. It has just been published. I have seen it, and it is a very very good book. A lot of history, old pictures of lacers, of laces... and finally a lot of patterns with diagrams (really important). With Carolina's patterns and Mariña´s book you will certainly have enough information and patterns for a whole life! Best regards from a really warm Spain. I am also very happy to belong to this group. I have learned a lot here, and I like its seriousness and that there is always someone out there to give a very valuable answer. Re: Re:[lace] Lace Postcard
Hello all, As a Spanish lacer, I can say that the pillow of the postcard is like our vertical pillows. The bobbins are the traditional Catalonian boxwood bobbins used all over Spain. And even the pattern is a traditional model made in Camariñas and Almagro, a mixture of torchon and guipur. The picture looks quite recent, as the pillow stand is modern. Traditionally women didn't use stands but the back of a chair or the wall. Investigating a bit further in the picture... she could be a Spanish lacer. An old woman dresses like this woman and sometimes is combed like her. Also the pattern of the ground (to be seen just under the chair) is quite Spanish. But I don't know if you find this pattern in the sidewalks of France too. Best regards... Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hello Ilse, The best place to sit is the place where you are comfortable making lace. But as a rule, I would say that you need to rest your back always on a surface (back of chair or of a sofa). You must feel your back relaxed. Usually, after making lace for a while, especially if it is a new piece where we need to put a lot of attention, we tend to tension our back little by little without noticing, and finally it becomes back ache. So, relax your shoulders and arms from now and then moving them in circles, for example, and check that you are sitting properly. (I work with a vertical pillow, so I sit on a comfortable chair and lean the pillow on the table. When I work with a roller pillow, I like sitting on the sofa, with pillows at my back and the lace pillow on my legs... that's for me the most comfortable place. I dont' know how lacers work on a flat pillow). I hope this information helps you. Best regards... Re: Spanish Lace Pillow Re: [lace] lace photos - what is it?
Hello all those interested in Spanish lace, Sorry for not having got in touch before. But I have a good excuse: I have been at the Diada of Arenys, and afterwards took a few days off at the Mediterranean coast. As Carolina has already told you, in Spain there are now so many lace meetings, that it is sometimes difficult to choose which one to attend. Not all of them are interesting. It all depends on what you are looking for. The Diada of Catalonia is, evidently, the most interesting of all, not only because of the number of participants, but also because it has an international presence. For example, in Arenys we could see an exhibition of important lace centers of Europe, such as Peniche (Portugal), Bobowa (Poland), Idrija (Eslovenia), France (sorry, but can't remember now which lace center was there!). And from Spain, our most important lacemaking centers were there: Arenys de Mar and Arenys de Munt (with a long tradition and a museum), L' Arboc (also long tradition, specific type of lace and also a museum) - both in Catalonia-, Almagro (also long tradition and a museum), Camariñas (also long tradition and museum)... Apart from this exhibitions, and conferences and courses held in Arenys along the whole week, the meeting itself gathers thousands of lacers from all over Spain. They sit at those big tables you have seen in the pictures, and make lace. Each group of lacers brings their best laces with them... But... not all lace meetings of Spain are the same. You are only seeing a selection of laces in these Picasa albums, usually the best pieces. But, normally you only see lots and lots of torchon and not so well done works. Something I like at the meetings is that there are many selling points: here you can buy many things you don't easily get in your local shops. I am going to write a short text about The Diada in my blog. Coming soon. I will tell you about it, so that you can read and see. Hope this answers some of your questions about lace in Spain. Re: [lace] Mirecourt
Hello all, There is also a book on this lace, called Dentelle de Mirecourt, from the editorial Didier CARPENTIER, published in 2008, with beautiful patterns and diagrams. Also a short introduction on history. As far as I understand (I only read French, but don't speak it), it says lace in Mirecourt was introduced in the 16th century by the dukes of Lorraine. In 1981 an association to promote the lace was created I think you can have a quick look to the book here: http://www.ebookdz.com/forum/showthread.php?33172-Dentelle-de-Mirecourt-La-seconde-vie-d-un-cahier-de-dentelli%E8re-du-XIXe-si%E8cle Best wishes. Re: [lace] OIDFA Lappets book .. errata on 14
Hi Alice, I have been looking at the pattern you mention and I think you can simply join Number 2 of the first pattern with Number 3 of the second one. And this would make the whole half lappet. As the second pattern seems to be identical at the beginning and at the end, it seems that the direction of this patten makes no difference. Would this help? Best wishes and good luck! Re: [lace] Early laces book errata
Thank you very much, Liz, for this information. I have already printed the pages. So, in the future, if I want to make something of the book, I will have the corrections there. On the other hand, although it is very probable that I never do anything of the book, I must say that it is an excellent study of the early laces as well as of the materials used for making bobbin lace. And, although many things said in the book we have already heard of them separately, the good thing is that we are able to read them all together in a same text. So, after reading the book, I have been able to connect ideas I had read, and that are now linked. I am always happy when somebody publishes a book like Rosemary Shepherd's, as there are not many new books on bobbin lace research. I really like this one. Hi Sue, I have seen this piece of lace in the Czech Republic this summer, at a wonderful exhibition of laces from the school of Iva Proskova. Re: [lace] Eva Schaefer
I am very sad of the loss of Eva Schaefer, whom I met through Arachne, and with whom I had lost touch a few years ago. Thanks to her, I had the opportunity to learn a lot things related to bobbinlace. She put me in touch with Mariña Regueiro, whose courses I have been attending for many years. She tought me not to put a flowery cover to my pillow (so typically Spanish). She taught me to make a crochet strip to hold the bobbins to the pillow in a safe way. She showed me bobbins of regions I had never seen before. She showed me her collection of lace books when I only had two or three: she also transmitted me the passion for buying lace books and now I also have a large collection. I learnt from her to wetten the linen threads while working, so that it did not break. To make picots differently to left and right. To make a star crossing the way they do it in Almagro (Spain). And many other things which I will possibly remember after finishing this writing. That's why the fact that that she could never see the magazine I have founded and edited, because she couldn't see anymore in the last years, makes me also very sad. I will always remember her. For those who did not know her, Eva Schaefer was a German Lacemaker who lived in Spain. That's why I could get to know her personally and meet her in several occasions. Re: [lace] Where can I buy this pattern?
Hi Pam and Arachne colleagues, Pam and I know what is going on on in many of our lacemeetings. So, no wonder her reaction. There are indeed quite many people who sell patterns taken from books and magazines here in Spain. A subject very difficult to avoid and to fight, because not even the organizers of the meetings care to put an end to this. A situation which is seen very differently depending on the point of view: the person who sells copied patterns is really happy to make money with no effort and the person who works the pattern feels really unprotected and underestimated! Apart from this, Pam, I imagine the lacemaker of the photo we have seen is making your pattern from the magazine. Best wishes, Antje, from Spain. Re: [lace] Need help with Brigitte Bellon pattern
Hello Vila, The pattern is beautiful, and I have made a scarf from the same book, which is made very similarly. I think there is nothing wrong in your piece of lace. (And there wasn't either in the one you cut off, as I can see). Number 2 is ok: you must leave the 2 edge pairs plus the guide waiting until you reach that border later again. Now you have to continue working the complete triangle in roseground, which may not offer difficulty because there is a diagram for the unfinished border in the pattern sheet to indicate you how to make it. Once you have finished the triangle, make the narrow cloth stitch trail that follows, then a row of whole stitches and again a row with a trail. You will have to make a joining at the first top stitch of this trail. I think that you have to keep working, because it does not look as if there are pairs missing. Ask again if you arrive to a problem later, but you should not have it. The patterns of this book are very accurate and in torchon everything matches. Keep telling us if these explanations were useful for you. Best luck! And don't cut the lace off! AS soon as you overcome this part, you will see it is not difficult at all. Hi Brian, Regarding your suggestion, I must explain that my magazine is only sold printed. And what Spanish people are doing, with most books and magazines on sale is scanning and/or photocopying them and selling them or exchanging them for free download on the web. To Jacquie's question why someone would be so 'altruistic' that they would want to do this: I ask myself the same. It is a false concept of being generous. In Spain it is also difficult to find blue film. It is sold in lace meetings and is very expensive. I also agree with Devon that we should print on blue paper. It is easy to print the pattern in our home printer. We do not need to print on cardboard, because we can put cardboard under the blue photocopy tp have the pattern hard. That is how I usually work. I never use orange paper, because it is not relaxing for the eyes. Although it was common practice in many parts of Spain, now you can find many lacemakers using blue. [lace] Translations of lace books
I am a translator too and have translated two lace books into Spanish. After that, the editor did not ask for more translations, because not many Spanish lacemakers bought these books and it was a big expense for them. Actually, it is an immense work to translate a lace book because it is, in fact, a technical translation. Not anyone can translate a lace text. The translator has to know how to make lace, apart from speaking or reading languages. And this is not easy to find. You can verify this by using Google translator. It is prepared to make a translation of a simple and everyday text, but not at all a text about instructions on how to make a certain stitch or technique... Not even a non lacemaker could understand this in his/her own language! So, although it is sad that we cannot get all the books that exist in our own language, a good idea for us is to try and learn a bit of the languages in which the books are written. At least the important words, to know what the texts are about. English is a must, of course. And German too. ... Well, we should have learnt all these languages when young! [lace] Lacemakers in Leeds (UK)?
Hello to all, I am staying in Leeds from the 28th to the 31st of May and would like to know if there are any lacemakers from this group living there and if it would be possible to meet. It is always so nice to meet up and put faces to the names we usually only read. Looking forward to your answers... perhaps it is better to answer privately. Re: [lace] lace style sheet, was lace proof readers
Hello all, Although my English may not be correct in many ways, I want to give my opinion, based in what I have studied a long time ago. In fact, we can use the word LACE in singular or plural depending on its meaning. If we use lace (in singular), we are using the word with a collective meaning, that is, lace as a group of laces, in a general sense: for example, lace is made in my country, I like making tape lace, lace lessons, etc. But if we use laces (in plural), we are being more specific: the laces made in our workshop.., or the ones made in England, laces made in such technique... . For this reason, in many cases we can use either the singular or the plural form, depending on the meaning we want or need. And often, we can even use both forms without making an important change in the meaning. Hope this helps to all those language lovers! Best wishes from Spain (where we finally have rain!) Hi Jery, Thanks a lot for this nice lace story. And for all the other interesting posts you send regularly to this list. In fact, I usually do not have enough time to read them all! The messages sent by Jeri Ames, Celtic Dream Weaver and Devon go to my Junk Box. There are no capital letters in these messages nor strange signs. Re: [lace] Jeri's posts
Hello Jeri and all, I have just started reading this messages about Jeri's postings and I must say that I am a bit puzzled. I cannot find the initial query, but have found the sentence people do not read what I write on Arachne, supposedly written by Jeri. And the first thing that comes to my mind is that those people mean that Jeri's emails continue going to their spam box (as mysteriously happens to me), and that's why they don't read them. Don't you think it is all a mistake of interpretation? I cannot believe anybody saying that Jeri's emails are not interesting, because in fact they are between the most interesting and useful ones in this group (please, don't get offended the others). Please re-read the initial message, Jeri, and perhaps you will see that nobody meant something bad about your messages. And if they did... listen to the rest of the group who really love to read your posts even if we do not always say so. We have often spoken of the different reasons for being quiet, haven't we? So cheer up and keep writing for your many admirers. Happy lacemaking and happy summertime. Re: [lace] Lace salamanders
I like all these kind of initiatives. The problem is that we cannot participate in all of them, as we don't have enough time to make all we want in bobbin lace! Anyway, is there a place in this web where we can see the requirements to make the salamander? Being able only to read the basics in French, your link takes me to a page where it only says that the salamanders are travelling to the Retournac Museum. [lace] Salamander group
Hello to all those interested in working Jourde's salamander. Last week somebody asked how to start the salamander. And I cannot remember who sent this SOS. But it made me think that, as we are quite a few interested in working it, we could form a kind of group and help each other as we go on working. I haven't started it yet, and have only the pattern printed but would love to work in company. If it is not an interesting information for Arachne, we could add all our emails in one and keep answering to this email. I offer myself to organize it. In the end, we can send a group participation of Arachne members. What do you think of this? Re: [lace] Majorca bobbins
Hello, I agree with Maria: what we call in Spain Majorca bobbins are the normal Catalan bobbins but with a pointed end. See here: http://www.lamerceria.com/productes.asp?idsubfamilia=2 , fourth item of the list. What I do not know is if they were traditionally used in Majorca or if they are called like that because they are used now there. Now you can get these bobbins thick and also a bit finer (but never as fine as Honiton, though). Hope this helps. [lace] Christmas Raffle
Hello all Arachne friends, I have been putting some order among my lacemaking magazines and have found some duplicates, which I would like to raffle among all those of you who are interested. The three magazines for the raffle are old La Encajera magazines (numbers 1, 10 and 21). I am putting a picture in Flickr Arachne for you to see. The magazine La Encajera does not exist anymore, but was one of the first Spanish magazines with interesting articles inside. I do not have the translations, but perhaps some of the subscribers can facilitate it. All interested Arachneans please send a private email to me with the subject Christmas Raffle: La Encajera. I will give a number to each email, in order of receipt, and on the 24th of December I will play Santa Claus and draw three numbers (with an innocent hand, believe me). I will send anywhere in the world. Good luck to everybody! [lace] Christmas greetings
With my preferred Christmas song, I want to wish all Arachneans a Merry Christmas Season and a Happy New Year, in which health and love may be with you. I also hope that you continue enjoying lacemaking as much as until now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S84RLgnz7Rs Arachne is the best bobbin lace group I know, with so many people always ready to answer and solve our lace problems. I have been on Arachne for over 10 years and I must say that I have learnt a lot. I also try to collaborate when I have a good answer or the time to do so. Unfortunately there are many emails a day, and sometimes I have to delete them before reading because of lack of time. But this does not mean they are not interesting. Best wishes from SPAIN (cold temperature, bright sun and Christmas carols on the background...!) Re: [lace] Vemeer
Hello Rose, The painting is fantastic. I love Vermeer. And to your observation I want to add that I imagine that this system of heating was used by many people in those times, including, possibly, lacemakers. Here in Spain, for example, many years later (around 1950), my mother, who was a school teacher in a small rural village in the center of Spain, had a tin with hot coal or wood, and also with holes. Everyday a different child had to take this heater from home to heat the school room! A big difference with today! Best wishes and a HAPPY NEW YEAR full of bobbin lace projects to all Arachneans!! Re: [lace] Idrija Lace Books
The Lace School of Idrija has recently published two books: one of narrow tape and the second of broad tape lace, with very good technical instructions. Well, all of the books they have published have good technical instructions. But, if you want to learn and follow the steps to their technique, these two books are really worth buying. Idrija tape lace has a lot of peculiar ways of making the tapes, which are worth knowing well from the beginning. I have always bought directly from them. I don't know if these books are sold somewhere else. They speak English, so writing to them is not a problem. http://www.cipkarskasola.si/en/cipkarska/84/siroki-ris-1-broad-tape-1/ http://www.cipkarskasola.si/en/cipkarska/83/siroki-ris-2-broad-tape-2/ Have fun making Idrija tape lace: I love it! Re: [lace] bobbin weight
I think we tend to work best with the bobbins we are used to work with. In my case, Spanish continentals, which most of you may find too big. Mine are 10,5cm long and woodbox. The first course I did of a technique different to torchon (many years ago) was a Tonder course. I had been told that each technique requires its specific bobbins and pillow, so I got borrowed a Danish pillow and bought the bobbins. The change of type of bobbins mixed with the technique I had never worked, made me go really slow! The next courses I did of a new technique, I took my most comfortable pillow and my own Continental bobbins. And I could work much faster. When attending a course, we want make the most of it, and if we are struggling with bobbins we are not used to work with, we really loose a lot of time. So, my opinion is that the best bobbins are always the ones we are used to! Best wishes and have a nice start of the week! I love the feeling of pinning on wool layers. Much better than using Styrofoam or other synthetic material. Re: [lace] Bobbin storage
What a good question! I see that we all have the same storage problems! I have kept changing the way I store my bobbins, and now I have them in transparent plastic boxes (in fact, those for chocolates of Ferrero-Rocher, http://idealgift.com.my/add-on-gifts/ferrero-t16.html). They are the perfect size of my bobbins (all continentals, of different nationalities). I have many of these boxes and it is really practical to be able to see which bobbins are inside each box. I keep the thread in metallic boxes, usually nice painted ones, belonging to biscuits or chocolates. They are so nice, that I do not want to throw them away. But they are not transparent, so I have to glue a sticker at the front indicating what kind of thread is inside: linen, cotton, silk, white, colour, metallic... etc. I find transparent boxes more practical. As a matter of fact, I think the best solution is a cabinet, as Alice mentions. But again... we need the space for the cabinet! My pillows do not have a specific place, they are all around the house: on top of book shelves, on pillow stands in the sitting room, in my studio, on the dining room table... By the way, a good solution of getting some more space in your home is borrowing the pillows not in use! I have borrowed a big bolster pillow and am really happy not to see it around all day! I hope my friend takes a lot time to finish her project!! Have a good weekend and happy lacemaking! â Antje González, from Spain, where we will reach 38º today! â www.vueltaycruz.es - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
