Figure images, unlike figure captions, are not saved to a list. A
pity, as this makes it difficult to get the associated figure image
given a figure number (or figure label). I would do this:
(1) make it so you can call the figure image with

My mistake. I remembered [number=no/yes] but it turns out there is also
[number=none]. Which does the trick. And the [distance=(dimension)] sets the

PS: There are still three pending issues in the area that is rarely used anyway:
- I need to fix font switching (I'm currently using
\sometxt[gp][iwona,20]{some label} which doesn't work in MKIV and is
an ugly hack in MKII)
- there are some problems with (draw

- there are some problems with (draw) externalfigure inside metapost
drawings; I might create an abstract layer around that
