These documents often have large tables, so I am using placetable[split] for
table placement. While placetable[split] works as advertised, the output
quality often suffers. One of the issues that I've

Try \placetable with \startcombination as it is in 'ConTeXt an
excursion' p. 30 and see if that produces what you want.

AFAIK \placetable or \placefigure accepts a single caption only and will
not break over pages.
