I need some clarification on the subject of viruses.  It's been my understanding that CS is not effective on viruses.  Yet people are successful treating colds with CS, but not the flu.  And yet -- colds are caused by viruses too -- commonly the rhinovirus. So -- what am I missing here?

That might be your problem -- you shouldn't be contaminating your glass or your rods by washing them with tap water.  You only need to wipe the silver rods off with a paper towel -- and once in awhile, wipe out the inside of your brewing jar the same way -- with a paper towel.  I wouldn't drink
