I resort to Ctrl-Q (quit)/restart Skype whenever I remember to do this
so it won't happen next time someone calls me on Skype.
Also when I manage to use it, almost invariably the second call on it
will be very choppy until I restart skype. VERY VERY annoying but
that's what we use at work and it's still the only way to communicate
with Windows users through double-NAT.

It seems that some other process is using ALSA (?) but what? and
shouldn't ALSA be able to handle several processes?

Apparently it's a Skype-specific issue, not ALSA.

Does anyone else have a solution to this problem? It happens on a
frequent but irregular basis.. enough to be embarrassing when I tell
people how wonderful linux is.

If you find any, I'll be very delighted to hear. I tried running
OpenWengo but it seems to freeze on the initial settings window, and
I'm not yet sure how useful it'll be through double-NAT and with
another SIP device already setup on my LAN (a Sipura-3000 ATA).

[SLUG] Nomination: Ken Wilson for treasurer

2007-03-25 Thread Lindsay Holmwood
Ok, time to get the ball rolling on the nominations front!

I'd like to nominate Ken Wilson for the position of treasurer.

Over the last 3 years Ken has been a fantastic treasurer, adeptly
managing SLUG's finances, helping out above and beyond what was required
of a committee member's duties, and providing a pragmatic and reasoned
voice throughout all decision making processes.

He would be a great asset to the next SLUG committee, and I heartily

To convert a Ubuntu server to desktop, I am pretty sure the all you need
is to apt-get install ubuntu-desktop which will add the virtual
package (and all its dependencies.

It sounds like your video chipset is causing you grief with the liveCD.
In cases like this, I always use the alternate CD which is basically a
desktop install cd using text-mode.

Subject: [SLUG] ubuntu server

Hi
The only way that I've been able to install ubuntu on my pentium-m
laptop is this bizare sequence:

1) Install server on laptop
After install boot fails with a register dump
2) install server on a desktop machine
3) apt-get the generic image (not the server!)
4) boot the lappie on knoppix.
copy the generic kernel, initrd, modules from desktop
5) boot the lappie, install ubuntu-desktop

OK nearly all good

apt-get the latest generic kernel fails (mkinitramfs tools dependencies)

The real problem is that despite wearing all desktop clothes the lappie
'knows' it's a server.
How, where do I change the personality from server to desktop?

BTW the problem is common to 6.06, 6.10 and feisty-beta In every case
live CD boots, displays a screen about gnome-error (message, network ?)
and there is a pretty desktop, mouse-that-moves and is unresponsive to
anything else eg install (icon highlights, click does pretty much
nothing.

This lappy installs SuSE 10.2 without any fuss, and as a server seems to
run perfectly (with the hand-crafted generic kernel, the server kernel
gives a register dump)

Don't worry, I don't do it, but I am assessing another operation.

It's really silly, and a nightmare to deal with. When the site
disappears the time-to-live caching counter and the time to live
on the zone itself start running. Once they expire mail will
start bouncing (no such domain).

Most ISPs will have a secondary service for their customers,
and the ISP pretty much knows the failure modes of their
network and will make sure one stays up (eg, by putting it
at a colocation facility).

I'd really advocate people to have a simple, robust DNS
design unless you are one of the dozen people in the world
who deeply understand DNS. I've debugged about a dozen sites
with severe DNS issues, and almost all of them sprung from
people ignoring simplicity and robustness.

I am behind a NAT router (Billion Bipac 5100) and it connects using the

has the same setup only with some other brand of router (forget what it
is right now) through the ekiga.net network. And, as I mentioned above,
I talk to Winders users through the Gizmo network.

The only trouble that I have had with it is that some of the codecs
don't seem to work well. I get good Gizmo connections with GSM and talk
to FWD people with PCMU. For some reason, the Speex codecs have caused
me grief, but I haven't tried them for some time.

He's showed significant improvement but now's the time for words of

you can email me a note and I'll make sure he gets them.

If you want to help in another way, we've been finding it tough here at
