I have done this using both "default applications" and the file
extensions in both "Settings" and even Cobtrol Panel. They stick for
a while, but then they get reset again. I'm not sure how long exactly,
but I think within one hour.

I have only noticed it with PDFs, but wnen doing Google and similar
searches ti try find a solution, it happens with others.

I never double click on anything anyway, but it gets annoying when I
view the PDF attachment in the mail I am about to send to make
sure it is the right one and have to reset again. PDFs are the only
files I attach directly. I put any others in a Zip or Rar so that
there is only one attachment per mail.

Try setting the association through Control Panel -> Default
applications - that's the only way to get the association to stick
with a program.

Windows 10 has a nasty habit of resetting file associations to the
"Microsoft defaults". I am having this issue with PDFs. First they get
reassociated with Edge, Look for EdgeBlocker - this stops Edge
starting, but then they get reassociated with TWINUI after some
unpredictable time of setting it back to what it should be. That works
for a while, but eventually it gets reset.

It is not deprecated, they are different protocols. Simple MAPI allows to send
an email (with an attachment) from any application, while Extended MAPI allows
accessing message stores (folders with mail messages).

It is better to select just "The Bat!", not "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit".

The problem is that even under 64-bit Windows, the Mapi Stub DLL calls
fixmapi.exe which is a 32-bit application and expects the final MAPI dll to be
32-bit, that's why "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit" wont' work under Windows 64.
But in case of applications call it directly (I don't know such), we have also
implemented "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit".

In my Windows 10 its called "default programs" or "default apps"
depending which screen view I look at (in case this helps anyone
to find it).

I don't see MAPI under "Choose applications by protocol" but can
see The Bat! and the two "The Bat! Simple MAPI" entries under "Set
defaults by app".

Is it best to select "URL mailto protocol" and "MAPI Send email command"
under The Bat!, or under "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit"?

No, Simple Mapi is just an interface which allow applications like MS Word,
Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, etc. to send email messages. They still use
Simple Mapi.

An application loads mapi32.dll from Windows system directory, which is just a
stub, that, in its turn, looks for a default Simple Mapi handler via registry,
at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail

I thought when a application tries to find a DLL it searches in the
current directory before the windows system directory. My The Bat!
program directory contains tbmapi64.dll but TB! does not display the
"Install The Bat! as the simple MAPI request handler" button.

It is The Bat! installer (MSI) that sets up the Simple MAPI handler. Moreover,
since Windows Vista, the Windows System folder is by default protected, so this
button would have been unable to copy the DLL handler there.

I have all tickmarks marked on the file associations, and none of them
mentions MAPI. I also don't have a long button that says "Install The
Bat! as the simple MAPI request handler"; my long button only asks
what to do when TB! detects that the file associations have been

This was only for the first-time connection, as all sorts of folders
were downloaded. I found the setting to ignore these, and on the next
connection, all folders that I did not want were deleted from my PC
again.

So, all is fine! Thanks for the tip with the URL.

TB! checks mail every 10 minutes as requested, but I cannot find the
setting for "combined send and receive" as I have with POP accounts.
So I need to hit "Send" manually every time I write an email. Did I

It's an NGO, they don't place ads on their mail server. Somebody
probably told them Exchange is the way to go, and people who use
Outlook have no problems. I do believe that TB! can handle this
protocol too. I just don't know how.

I asked for a POP access. Instead, they gave me these for an Exchange

Select Microsoft Exchange Account;

Exchange server: xxx.org.uk

Domain? TB! does not ask for that...

I tried this in the account that I had set up for Exchange Web
Services, which did not lead to success.

So I created a second account, this time using MAPI (MS Exchange), and
TB! complains with this log entry:

!21-Feb-17, 10:02:41: FETCH - MAPI.MapiInitialize
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mapi32.dll HResult=80004005 (Unspecified error)

I do have this file on my computer.

Try using the following URL in TB for configuring Exchange:

https:///ews/exchange.asmx

(where is the server that hosts Outlook Web Access)

With public wifi access points they sometimes call this a "captured
portal". Thecloud.net is a common example encountered in UK pubs and
cafes and some railway stations. I've not personally encountered this
for email access, the closest I have seen is requiring that you check
for incoming mail before being allowed to send ("POP before SMTP").

And just maybe you can find the POP/SMTP/IMAP servers with a bit of
googling (or searching user forums), unless they are actually not
enabled.

Isn't the point of webmail-only services that all records are on their
servers, so that they can serve advertising when you want to read
messages (or sell information to the highest bidder)?

https://webmail.xdomainx.net/ews/exchange.asmx is the server I had to
define when I set up my exchange account two weeks ago . It worked
some month ago but (as you can read n the beta-list) in november I had
to remove this account from TB because of constant crashes. The
account was set to get new mail every 60 min and I could not change
this fast enough. Actually I use a new EWS.dll Maxim sent me and this
behaviour persists. (But in defining the account newly I could set it
to prevent check at start-up)

When I first defined the exchange account in summer, TB was able to
find the exchange server itself, although the TLD is different from
the TLD of my address (.de <-> .net). Perhaps that is due to a server
config.

I used EWS because MAPI doesn't work for me.

I get this with some wifi accesses. You have to start a web browser
first and do that login. Afterwards your email client should work
normally.

Some providers try to make you use the webmail. But if you can find
the right person, they can give you a normal POP access so that you can
use an email client for that email address rather than web browsers.
Webmail is a pain as you have to cc yourself / forward / redirect to
a normal email address for every message, otherwise
you have no record.

Thanks, but what would it look like if you use TB! with an Exchange
server?

I also saw that there are two options when setting up an Exchange
email account in TB!:

Exchange Web Services
MAPI (Microsoft Exchange)

Which is for what?

I know nothing about exchange servers, but "https://x.org.uk;
looks like a website (possibly webmail interface?) rather than a mail
server.
