Booting from a rescue system and running grub-install followed by a grub-
mkconfig solved the problem.

When you emerge grub, Gentoo compiles and "installs" grub (and some
grub-related tools) to a directory inside your Gentoo installation, just
like other applications. The catch is that grub isn't like other

Just did a stage 3 install following a HD crash on a new HD. The initial
install went without issue and I booted from the HD normally. I then went
through and installed a bunch of packages - xorg, kde, etc. I installed

If I install XP in the partition and it writes over the MBR,
then, upon reboot, how do I get to grub.conf so I have the
option to reboot the gentoo, then run grub setup?

I just took a quick glance at the ebuild, and it looks like it should print
a reminder ("Re-run grub-install to update installed boot code!") every
time you upgrade from an older version to a newer one, but it also looks
like the reminder gets skipped if you're re-emerging the same
I have tried that , but it didn't work . But it comes the error : "Error
11: Unrecognized device string". I can't figure out why it comes...
