The difficulty had been exaggerated. I don't think it is more than the ability of the brain to put together a 3D image of the local world and where you are in it. Plus things like sound, temperature, smell and pressure on your body.

The smallest mammal is conscious and they don't have large enough brains for anything more complicated.
