This paper is curious and I had not seen it - but essentially it seems to be of passing importance since even the authors did not pursue it further. It is a mistake to think there is a more general lesson from seeing 400 counts over 3 hours. There is probably a mundane explanation.

The problem is low counts (they admit to "low" but really they are extremely low) and the lack of correlation to excess heat. In fact there is an inverted relationship. That probably explains why they did not pursue the finding or even move to scale up.

Had the gamma counts been orders of magnitude higher, or coordinated with excess heat, the obvious next step is to scale up.
