Would it defy the premise of this group if I were to ask you
what you think are the most useful applications in this
inventory? I'm talking about freeware, of course.

Well:
You all need to realize that with 8000 programs I have certainly never had
the time to try them all or evaluate them. These programs come to me on DVDs
and CDs mostly from the Computer magazines that I read and are usually
recommended by the mag. Since they come from different sources over time,
there
are probably many duplicated ones. Others are recommended from the groups and
I usually tests those and if they have merit, I will save some.

Now having said that I should add that I don't often find many that suit me
any better than what comes with Windows or AOL. and I like to keep things
simple. I have installation copies for most ISPs, have tried Firefox but
(not as a criticism) it does not have the features I need, and I have added a
few small programs I can't be without. To locate browsers, or partitioning
tools I would need time to search my files. Virus programs are easier to find.

I always recommend the Synchronizing tools, such as Synctoy, Goodsync, and
Karen's. I have always used Brutus logoff. It shuts down or restarts XP or
Vista from icons in the Quiklaunch. Close All closes all the running Apps on
the desktop so one can start fresh. Move on Boot is excellent. I've never
noticed any differences following a Registry cleaner. I have not found any
Backup tools any better than Window's except Imaging tools and there I use
Norton or Accronis. Programs that "Organize" something are more difficult to
use
than Windows and take more time. After trying a few "searches" I do as good
with windows. Malware, I'm already well protected. Many free programs are
either not free or won't do the fixes without a payment.

All the programs can be downloaded offline and locating them is just a
matter of typing their name in one's browser. That's about as close as I
can
get without a specific request.

Emile
