I know what you mean. In our huge throw-away spasm prior to
moving from our present house to an apartment, I came upon a
couple of old stamp albums. Hours and hours of work went
into them when I was a kid, and here I was contemplating
throwing them out. FYI: I removed the stamps that appeared
valuable or particularly lovely, then tossed the album.

Google has this elaborate sidebar that I downloaded,
thinking it might be useful. It proved to be an unnecessary
monster that got in the way. Dumped it forthwith.

I downloaded the latest version of Synchtoy (v. 1.4) but
noticed that Microsoft says it's for Vista. I have XP. Will
it work on XP. Also, can you synchronize individual files?
If this is as good as you say (and as good as Microsoft
says) I'll use it for all my backups. I don't need a fancy
backup program with files that need to be decompressed or
something like that. As you say, it's best to keep things
simple.
I'll await your answer.

Well, this is where we part company. It's a matter of what
era you come from. I started using computers before mouses
(mice?) were invented. Everything was done on the keyboard
and I still love using it. However, I have an icon on my
desktop I call "Reboot." You double click it with your mouse
and voila! Down goes the computer and back up while I head
for the dinner table.
