Maybe the .pst file is corrupted somehow. Here are some things I would try - dunno if they would work, but they're worth a shot:
1. try opening the pst file in MS Word or even Wordpad as a text file - then manually recover what you can by copy/paste. 2. try renaming the file to .txt and then opening as mentioned above. 3. put the file on a thumb drive or SD card and plug it into computer. Go to My Computer and try running a ChkDsk on the drive. If chkdsk sees that the file is corrupt it will try to fix it and recover fragments of it which you can access (maybe) with any text file editor. I 'think' chkdsk will store any file fragments it creates in a folder on the drive your run it on. These files will be called random numbers such as *******.chk. You can maybe open these in any text editor and try to recover your data - or, sometimes, you can simply rename the .chk to .pst and the file will miraculously open (heh, I hope). BE SURE TO ONLY DO THIS WITH a COPY of your pst file, since the file might be destroyed in the chkdsk process.
