When you tried copying the .pab files what happened when you tried to
open the address book in Outlook? Did you just get an empty address
book, or did you get an error message?
Is it possible your backed up .pab file is corrupted? Does it's
properties show that it has any size (not 0kb)?
I just don't understand if the file worked with the same version of
Outlook, why it shouldn't still work. Are you sure you're copying it to
the right folder?
Sorry I can't be more help... those are just things I would double check.

If all else fails there might be a work-around you could try. If you
have MS Word, or Excel, (or maybe Open Office will do it too) you can
try opening the .pab file in Word or Excel. Then save it as a CSV file
(that's a generic text delimited format). And I think that Outlook will
have an option to import the CSV file under the File menu, Import/Export
option. Sometimes the results of doing this aren't perfect, and you'll
have to do a little editing to get it right, but it would be better than
nothing.

About your backup problem... I keep 2 types of backup:
1. A "disk-image" type backup that will completely restore the entire
computer to the way it was the day that the last backup was made. This
is great for a bad virus infection, or dead hard drive, where you have
to reformat or replace the hard drive. It's not unusual for this to
fail with a new mobo, since upon first boot the OS is searching for LOTS
of hardware it has drivers for, but is finding LOTS of different
hardware, heh. It will usually choke when this happens and fail.
Sometimes, it is possible to boot into Safe Mode, uninstall the old
drivers, and then install the new drivers and get it to work.
2. The 2nd type of backup is mainly for data. Create a backup set of
your important data with a backup program (I use Syncback). So no
matter what happens to your PC mobo, etc., you'll always have your
data. It sounds like you did this, which is good (except for that
darned pab file). Also, if possible, tell the backup program to NOT
compress or otherwise alter your data. Just make a simple file-for-file
copy of your data. That way, your data will always be accessible from
any PC without using any program - and much less risk of any corruption
caused by compressing or bundling the files.

Hope you get your address book back.
Donk
