That was my first thought this morning when I read about Microsoft's
offer...no doubt they will convert it to some .net module and ensure
it only works with IE7 + :-)
No, they'll make sure it only works with IE8 to force an upgrade and
give more chance to weed out pirated licenses.
Talking of MS, did you guys see these articles:

Apple's Webkit Dev team's response:

My opinion is more or less like this comment:

I would add, the proof that Microsoft is a pernicious monopoly (and
would NEVER survive based on merit alone) is the fact that Microsoft
could get away with even releasing IE6 -- the single most heinous
piece of software (to call it software is kind) ever written,
responsible for millions of botted PCs which are now flooding our
inboxes with spam. And to add insult to injury, they were growing so
fat on their ill-gotten monopoly money that they didn't even care
enough to fix a single bug for 6 years, which is the equivalent of
something like 2 decades in any other industry.
What more can you say? A lethal combination of arrogance on top of
incompetence.
Q: How many Microsoft programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None. They just redefine darkness as the standard.
