Oops--just realized I hit send twice by mistake.

I just re-read my post, and realized you probably can't tell I had my tongue in
cheek with the last sentence. I sure didn't mean to say I haven't had plenty
of excellent expert advice on the internet, and I'm very grateful for it, or
I'd never solve half of my problems. It just hit me as funny that this kid
(cute little nerdy thing) just said, "Oh, just change the extension to mpg."
lol

YES!! I was going crazy with the same problem. I have a Canon SD800, and my
avi files were not recognized either. I have Canopus Procoder Express, and
tried everyconceivable method, but the quality would become terrible.

The solution is so simple, I can't stand it. Simply rename the file from
whatever.avi to whatever.mpg

  Worked like a charm.

I can't tell you how many experts on the internet wanted me to download a
million different codecs to try and fix the problem, and some kid told me to
just rename the avi to an mpg!

I have a canon point and shoot that can also shoot video clips. It
saves the files in .avi format, but when I try to import them into
Premiere it say it's not a supported format.

  anyone been through this?

done some "converting" in Roxio, but lost the sound for some reason
