Johnny,

Didn't you read the post? You don't need a converter. All you do is change
the extension from avi to mpg. You can then import it. The files produced by
the Canon are MJPEG files. They show an avi extension, but you just have to
rename it to mpg and they import fine.

YES!! I was going crazy with the same problem. I have a Canon SD800, and
my avi files were not recognized either. I have Canopus Procoder Express,
and tried everyconceivable method, but the quality would become terrible.

The solution is so simple, I can't stand it. Simply rename the file from
  whatever.avi to whatever.mpg

  Worked like a charm.

I can't tell you how many experts on the internet wanted me to download a
million different codecs to try and fix the problem, and some kid told me to
just rename the avi to an mpg!

I have a canon point and shoot that can also shoot video clips. It
saves the files in .avi format, but when I try to import them into
Premiere it say it's not a supported format.

  anyone been through this?

done some "converting" in Roxio, but lost the sound for some reason
