SharpDevelop2 (http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/) is IMHO a worthy
competitor to VS2005 in many respects. It feels much more snappier and there
are no sudden freezes like it happens so many times in VS 2005. The source
code is all there in C# (wow, no COM+ funky API, woohoo) and the add-in
architecture is well thought out.

On the bad side, the support for web projects is very limited and it has no
source control integration, except for Subversion which even then is very
basic. The default templates and syntax highlightings are rather strange but
you can easily customize them as you see fit. I have not seen any option to
use VS 2005 defaults or import them from a .settings file. And sometimes,
there are some annoyances that could have been easily avoided, like when you
add a new project, the location does not default to the solution folder;
there is no cancel button on many operations; NUnit and NDoc are integrated
rather than external (I happen to use a "personal" version of NDoc which can
handle generics, so I had to get around that). etc.

Be aware that the installer for the 2.1 beta does not play nice and will
override file associations and icons. I would recommend the 2.0 release
version at this moment.
