Careful there! That dangerous encryption stuff might burn your fingers!

Do you think that would have played? Oh, I am just encrypting my

No, you would have gone to jail and possibly have been hanged.
We never had these liberties until lately. Technology has given us
new liberties, we are not throwing existing liberties away, just
controlling the public’s access to potentially dangerous new
technology. Stuff that didn’t exist before.
There is always regulatory lag in stuff like this.
Like 3D printing a fully automatic weapon. How about 3D printing a
nuclear weapon or a biological weapon? New technology creates new
liberties. I don’t believe human rights incorporate the right to
automatically have free use of any new technology.
Of course I can be trusted with all new technology, just not all you
guys....

Right, this isn't like they're asking for a backdoor so they can
access any iPhone remotely at any time... they have to physically have
the device for it to be of any use, which is something they've been
doing for a long, long time... and they probably will figure out how
to do again without Apples help, it would just be a lot easier and
cheaper (and waste less tax money) if Apple helped.

But it has been done thousands of times. FBI and NSA have been
cracking for years. Just much more difficult these days.
Seriously, what is the problem with our nation state being able to
crack encrypted data? (Again presuming they have our best
interests at heart and can be trusted, this is a theoretical
discussion). What would I ever encrypt that I would have a
problem with the NSA seeing? I cannot imagine needing strong
encryption other than to keep folks out of my network and bank
account.

Problem is that once you do it. It's done and they can do it
again, and again. If you think it will only ever get used on this
ONE phone then you are delusional.

As I understand it, that is exactly what the gov is asking them
for. FBI
wants Apple to decrypt and send over the data. Nothing more. No
"software on every phone" to do this. Just that ONE phone. Get the
data,
then incinerate the device.

They're
just saying 'hey, we have this physical device, can we give it
to you,
and you get us the data off of it'? I've got to think that the
Engineers at apple have a way to do this thought up.
Although at the same time, If they're trying to unlock the phone,
couldn't the Gov't with it's vast resources, just simply make
a bit by
bit copy of the flash chip in the phone and just go through
and try
every unlock code?
