Now this is the kind of research I like to see. LHC produced 29 picograms
of gold over a 4 year period. One problem is that gold is worth $132 per
gram and the LHC has an operating budget of $1 billion per year. The other
is that the gold nuclei were moving so fast that they shattered into
individual protons and neutrons nanoseconds later. So really they were
converting lead into hydrogen. But it is still interesting.

I remember Mentifex and the 1 star reviews of his book AI4U on Amazon. I
didn't know he died.

Anyway I anticipate a couple of more Hutter prize results coming up, and
I'm looking at the code trying to understand it. It looks like the current
winner uses a 12 layer transformer with layers 4, 8, 12 non linear, and 3
query and 3 key value attention heads per layer. The latest entry that I'm
still testing improves on that by another 4% by increasing the number of
parameters from 6M to 8M, moving some of the training online, and other
optimizations. I'm looking at Python calling Kimi transformers running on
GPUs on rented cloud hardware, AI translated code from C++ to Zig and back
to C++, and it's pretty overwhelming. It's not quite recursive self
improvement when a large language model writes a small language model, but
that's the trend. We aren't supposed to be able to understand the thing we
are building.
