George,

I only have experience with GTV's and Spiders, but I've never had a
problem like you describe.  By putting the old rubber on the new
brackets you basically now have old mounts installed as the brackets
normally don't fail.  I think I would have tried using the new rubber
with your old brackets and see if that worked any better.  Is it
possible that your supplier sent you GTV/Spider mounts as they are
different, but the rubber is probably the same?
