I don't go to the IO events for the food or the free toys.
Food at conferences is always lousy so this is just an underhanded
insult. Recognizing swag is good show etiquette.
On topic though, so long there's interesting stuff (in contrast to
fluff announcements) and authoritative presenters (in contrast to folk
that punt every other interesting question) I know where I spend my
time.

At any rate, assuming a 21+ crowd, if you guys want to grab a beer
while in town I can find a good place off the beaten path (Union
Square and the like) to hang out.

At least Google IO is reasonably priced. I might drop by the Expo for the other one in San Mateo. I started attending developer conferences starting with the Amiga one in Washington, DC in 1988. The early Game Developer's Conferences were fun and I often got a hotel room because I just don't like to deal with commute traffic here in the Bay Area. And food at some of these during the boom times of the 90s wasn't bad at all. I attended the Palm Developer's conference in 1998 where Kevin Nealon ("SNL", "Weeds") was the celebrity guest. We took over the Tech Museum for an evening. At one GDC Microsoft hosted a party by renting out Great America for the evening. Those were days (or was it "daze").

Yup, these are mainly schmoozefests for folks probably a bit awkward at schmoozing.:-D
