For the Game Developer's Conference (in SF a couple weeks before Google IO -- not trying to do both this year) I'm staying in Oakland a short walk from Rockridge Bart at a place I found on airbnb.com. It's a full in-law studio apartment, and it cost $70/night. If you don't mind renting a room in a house, you can do even better than that. I used to live in the area, so I knew I'd be comfortable with the neighborhood, and it's about a 20 minute Bart ride into the city from there.
