What happened to RSS readers when Google Reader launched?

The general concept of competing with developers seems like a dick move on
Google's part, but you also can't expect them to NOT put out apps for their
main products.

That said, however, Google does have it's name behind it's app but that also
brings about high expectations, which they usually do not deliver on. The
reader app, for example, is crap (it's got a 4 star rating which I don't
consider good for an official Google product). I used it for about 5 minutes
before uninstalling it and going back to NewsRob.

Compete with Google the way you compete with any other app - make a better
product that's worth using and paying for.
