I agree that's how it looks now. From a pure selfish standpoint, I can
wish Nokia had chosen Android so I could get more customers with less
work.

But can you imagine how dumb this statement would seem if made in
2007? 'Let's see we have RIM, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. It would be
great if we could just stick with these OSs and let hardware
manufacturers compete on hardware. Who needs iPhone, who needs
Android?'

There may come a time when Android is stagnant or not meeting the
needs of the time. That will happen sooner if there aren't strong
alternatives keeping it in check.

Right now, sure, the market is obsessed with meaningless stats like
apps in the App Store. I know most people here aren't doing apps that
you could do in HTML5, but that doesn't change the fact that maybe two
thirds of the apps in the App Store could be done in HTML5. Maybe
people will realize they only use ten apps. Or some other factor
dominates that doesn't seem as relevant now.

The Nokia/WinPhone 7 is good for developers in that there is one less
platform. It's possibly good for consumers, and for developers in the
long run, because there might be enough critical mass for a new
contender. If they implode because the platform is bad or they don't
stick out the market long enough, so be it.
