I've long noticed that, for my apps which have both free and paid versions, the paid version gets higher reviews. My theory was always that, if somebody has paid for an app, they'll give it a chance rather than simply dismissing it out of hand. Also, if a user is interested enough in your app to pay for it, they're likely to be in your target market - and thus will appreciate the app - as opposed to some random yahoo who will just download anything that's free.
