Most of the users who've paid for my companies app have used the free version before hand and so know what they're getting and hence are less likely to leave the kind of mindless negative reviews that we sometimes see on the free version (e.g. 1* - "Does not do what I want", yup, we really had that).
There may be a few who just buy apps, but I'd be surprised if there are many who haven't at least given the free version a spin first.
