Other things being equal, I'd rather have one customer for $10 than ten customers for $1.
The answer may vary based on your situation. If the app requires ongoing development support and service, less customers are cheaper. One case where you might want more customers is if the app is low maintenance, and you want a larger quantity of customers to be able to sell them more things. For example, it might be worthwhile to drop the price of lasts year's app, or even make it free, to flood the market in advance of the release of your next big hit. Then direct people to the new shiny object in an inapp link. In one webinar I went to, the guy intends to make hundreds of little games, with the hope of driving the traffic to another, more profitable game in the future.
