They tend to think that I am both looking over their shoulder and reading 
their mind, and that I can push a button back at headquarters that will 
make it work. 

I expect that most people are not deliberately withholding information 
because of a deep hostility towards programmers, but there is always an 
exception. . . 
 
One user said that something didn't work as it said it did in the manual. 
When asked for more details on either what feature he meant or what part of 
the manual, he said:

"after carfull thought i refuse to be more specific about the 

issues because in my experiance programers dont talk in laymans terms, i 
dont have time to help you debug your product, if you study your 
instuctions against the app you will see that they do not match!"

OK, then, we will do a routine review of our instructions. You can 
certainly hope that we accidentally fix your particular issue. 

Sure hope this guy doesn't ask about the progress on his issue.
