Hi Jacob, To be exact, I have started the whole thing once I opened my profile at n-1, where I have discovered the whole world of social activity, being separated by the linguistic problem. It is quite different to know such thing from the statistical data, showing Spanish as a second most important language in our area, and to see it in practice. But, as I am involved in, generally speaking, social change activity, I have practically realised that the most interesting things are being done now by people who do not even care to learn English (being too busy doing revolution ;-) ). Being non-native English speaker I somehow kept in mind that it is a lingua franca of today's world. But that 'today' was 20-ish years ago, whan I was learning English. Now, Greek, Italian, Portugal, Castellano, Catalan and a wealth of other languages are blooming - and there is an urgent need to find a way to let all those great people communicate. Being a Pole, it was natural for me to think about Esperanto, which is a part of our tradition (shared with Jews). And finally, as I relised that there is not a lot of support among n-1 users and lorea developers (they feel themselves quite ok in their Spanish comfort zone - how similar to my Anglo-Saxon friends...) I decided to set up my own server, using Friendica, which is much more open standard and much easier to tweak. So, if we could, let's move ahead with the prototyping a plugin for Friendica, calling up apertium and doing the translation. Once we have that, we may go ahead with dedicated server (which will be eventually needed due to privacy concerns among activists). As for bridge vs. direct translation, I think that we should at least start from the bridged model. It is more elegant (in terms of structure) and needs less resources. I can imagine that the final translation (on demand) coul be done directly, provided respective pair exists.
