Considering what Jacob & Bernard said, I have reformulated the idea a bit. Stage 1. My goal is to prepare Apertium server as a distributed resource to work with Friendica distributed social network - like http://freelab.org.pl (and be ready to work with any other software). The functionality is to provide on-demand translation for all content, plus a collaborative environment for those who wish to contribute to the Apertium project. At this stage I believe we may focus on the list of languages Brenard provided, possibly with the addition of German, Russian and Polish. Stage 2. The Esperanto bridged translation. It is not just matter of pair number (which, at the level of 7 languages being already in the system, is alreadu an issue). It is also a way to provide uniform content archivisation/retrieval platform. If I have my local content translated (by default, not on demand) to Esperanto, I can search it, using Esperanto keywords (easy to learn, or suggested by the system) and retrieve either the Esperanto version, or the original language version, later to be translated directly (if there is a respective pair available). It seems to be a significant improvement to harness the energy and commitment of national esperantist communities. I am now working with the Warsaw Hackerspace to improve Friendica and to build a bigger package of distributed/federated services aroung it.
