 I just tried it with
telnet> mail.cisnet.com 110
user username
pass pssword
(it automatically displayed that I had 7 messages)
dele 7
(message 7 deleted)
dele 6
(message 6 deleted)
continued with 5,4,3,2 and 1
list
(O messages)
quit
(back into Arachne)
