They use an extension to SMTP.
As I already wrote SMTP has a _BIG_ drawback, it does not support
authentication, so there is a problem with spammers, and not well
configured servers.
So there are 3 options:
1) allow only certain IP adresses to access the server (not applicable for
free providers, becausr IP adress is not known)
2) pop before smtp (pop requires authentication, after you connect to the
pop server, the IP is recoreded, and you are allowed to use the SMTP
for a certain amount of time)
3) authenticated SMTP (some extension of SMTP, so that you need a
username/passwd)
only methods 1 and 2 can be used with arachne.
(method 2 eg for gmx.net you need first to get your mail, before you are
allowed to send it)
