Let me see, here are the 486's around here with successful Arachne
installations: All had working 1.50 s.r.c. then all were upgraded
to 1.60b1:
l. Toshiba T1910CS Laptop, 486SX-33, 20MB RAM 200MB HDD
2. IBM PS/2 486SX-33 8MB RAM 270 MB HDD. Can upgrade to
Evergreen 586 when I get $. Can't find RAM anywhere.
3. Tandy 486DX-50 with 8 MB RAM, 120MB HDD.
My IBM PS/1 with 486SX-33 8 MB ram 130MB HDD worked with
Arachne 1.60b1, but is now upgraded to Evergreen 586, 32MB RAM
and 270MB HDD. Runs Arachne 1.60b1 wonderfully, as you can
imagine.
4. Compudyne with AMD DX4-100 16MB ram, 2 gig HDD runs
Arachne 1.60b1 using boot disk, and has WIN 98 on it
so I can try out the free ISP's, compile a list of
WIN 98 complaints to toss around at the office, etc.
It's not a 486, but it's slower than a Pentium 75.
5. Compaq Deskpro 575, Pentium 75, 1 Gig HDD, 24 MB RAM.
Runs my Netdial 1.3 - Arachne 1.60b1 setup
All machines boot up into a menu, allowing me to choose
between Arachne, Win 31 (with lots of win browsers and email
programs),Bobcat, Scandisk, Defrag, DOS Prompt. All are called,
so the menu returns after each, except for the Prompt.
The Compudyne has a sound card, SB16, and has WIN 98 and DOS
sound, Arachne can play midi's also, using play.exe. The DOS
menu setup on the Compudyne has sound added, so all actions
are preceded by entertaining (to me, anyway) short .wav files.

I have been able to get Arachne to run on every machine I
own, thanks to the help I have obtained on this list. Once
a successful setup pattern has been established, with
arachne.cfg, and .acf files for each machine, then it's
easy. Most upgrades took only a few minutes from 1.50 to
1.60b1.
