It sounds like you might have a "gap" in your COM ports that is
causing your BIOS to report your modem on the wrong port. The dialer,
Miniterm does not have this problem, but the packet driver looks at
the port that the BIOS reports and if, for instance, you have a mouse
on COM1 and your modem on COM3 or COM4, the BIOS may be reporting
that the modem is on COM2 and when the packet driver looks at COM3 or
COM4 there appears to be nothing there. If you can, you should put
your modem on COM2 (if you machine is set up as I described) or in
such a manner that there is not an unused COM port between 2 ports
that are in use. There are a couple of programs that when run will
fix this problem so the BIOS will report the ports completely. I
am sure somebody will post where you can find one of these, but I
don't use them myself and I can't remember where you can get one. I
hope I got all this right and that this helps.

my modem was detected on COM 2 IRQ 3. so I don't think that is the problem. miniterm
dials and as far as I know, connects, but when I close miniterm (or just wait) I get
these error messages. I tried to run the other dialer included with arachne by itself
(epppd.exe, I think)and I AUTOMATICALLY get the messages. I am lost here.
I wish the buck stopped here. I could use a few.
