What do you have on COM1? A mouse? If there is no COM1 (i.e. you use
a PS/2 mouse port, for example), you could still have this problem
if there is NO COM1 for the BIOS to see. If you are running MSDOS
6.xx, what does MSD (Microsoft Diagnostic) show about your COM
ports? IIRC, MSD often reports the ports incorrectly, as I have had
machines with a COM1 (mouse) and COM3 (modem) and it reports only
COM1 and COM2. I guess it relies on the BIOS for it's port info
also. Glenn M. posted the URL to the comports fix program as well as
offered to send it to you (or anybody else) so you might want to
get the program and try it. BTW, EPPPD.EXE is another special version

of the the packet driver, not another dialer. Arachne, can be used
with another dialer (i.e. Netdial et.al.) but that should not be
necessary. Be persistent, we almost certainly can get you connected
so you can enjoy the real pleasure of surfing with Arachne. TTYL.
