That's because of one simple fact....
The "Xconfigurator" as you call it, runs in VGA mode.
(regardless of which card you might have installed, and regardless of
which server you might choose to use while doing the config).
If you do not have the "VGA server" (the real one, not a renamed one),
on the HDD.... the config is not going to run.
Look at it this way...
Would it be possible to "properly" configure and test a sound card in
DOS if you did not first plug-in the speakers??? <VBG>
But to make a more appropriate comparison.
When doing the Arachne video setup.... what happens if we choose
1024x768 Hicolor when your Video card is only capable of
1024x768 256color (max res for Hicolor on this card is 800x600)
