Um.
I have returned from another trip to the salt mines with no more luck
but a few new guesses.
The above is not necessarily clear to me.
Yes, I have the real XF86_MACH and what appears to be a symbolic link
from /usr/X11R6/bin/X11 (XF86Config) > /etc/XF86Config (newly generated)
Yes, I have the XF86 that came with RH 5x.
What does that direct link mean ? I'm only allowed to use ATI cards ?

No, XF86_MACH won't let me run as long as I have the Matrox card instead
of the ATI card installed. That was discovered as soon as I changed
cards.

I will try it immediately. <g> Thanks.

It seems less likely now that a reload would do any good.
My hunches now run like this:
It worked the first time because I had an ATI MACH64 card installed
and XF86_MACH existed. Maybe XF86_SVGA _NEVER_ existed.
When the configurator checks the card it decides for itself that the
card needs the svga server and there seems to be no way to circumvent
this. Therefore it fails.

Ok, back again from another trial.
The text-based configuration thing is some improvement. At least you
have the option to change defaultly provided settings.
I was surprised to find the Matrox card on the long list, but I was
still presented with the suggestion that I use the SVGA server.
I tried it. Wishful thinking - my manual search had already indicated
it didn't exist - but for all I know it might get created. :((
Got an execve error (low number (2 ?)) then another error after a short
wait.( #111) and it gave up. At least it didn't say the server didn't
exist.
So I re-entered the manual XF86config and this time selected VGA16.
Same result error wise - even after a reboot.
I've wasted enough time on this for tonite. I'd like to do something
more useful before midnite. <G>
Thanks for your help.
