Jim's right. We'll have to see some details to see where things are going wrong, otherwise we're guessing. Here's one of my guesses though: check for a line that says "stripmsd=...." in your zapata.conf. If you've got that set to 1 for channel 2, then it will stip the leading 8 from your dial string.
