As Simon mentioned, there may have been a bad batch:

The gpsoz page mentions a cost of $200 for replacing the battery, but it
sounds as if Garmin might be doing better than that.

That page also suggests that the lithium battery doesn't charge when the
GPS is on external power, but only when it has batteries fitted. A bit
counter-intuitive! It's usually a bad idea to leave batteries in a device
which is unused for months - they go flat, leak and corrode the precious
gadget.
