I must admit to some issues with using the sporting licence for this -
as 'accreditation' seems (from the discussions I have had) to really
equate to pilot competency. Whilst the FAI licence implies a 'notional'
competency (you need to get the application signed by your CFI first
time around), there is absolutely no requirement to have the CFI
involved in any renewal. Furthermore, there are many CFIs out there who
rarely (if ever) fly in competitions - so how are they to judge competency?

Given this, I really doubt that the requirement for an FAI licence
actually does much at all to guarantee pilot competency at the
competition level.
