Some very good points Scott, but please don't compare essential
services such as health care with a pilot wanting to enter an overseas
competition. I was not arguing about any other service paid by clubs
which may not be used by all - all of these clearly benefit the club as
a whole. I especially would not suggest removing support for form 2
& instructor training as you imply (do I really sound that stupid?)! I use that reasoning because I have not been convinced of the value to "the furtherance of gliding in Australia" SPECIFICALLY regarding overseas competition teams. If your argument for this is true, the GFA members should be aware of these benefits to the whole gliding movement. However I would want to see proof of your clam that "...an overseas team encourages people from overseas to fly in Australia..." Of course it is obvious that "...adding or removing support for an individual item can have larger impacts that are not only hard to see but even harder to quantify." yet quantify them the GFA must in order to justify the existence of questionable components such as this. If they can quantify it, then I have no argument. I am happy with the magazine, at lest this is something which each member receives and can contribute to, also can be a tool for promoting gliding. Funding an association like the GFA is a careful balance - adding or removing support for an individual item can have larger impacts that are not only hard to see but even harder to quantify. Now... a controversial one - how about reducing the money spent on the magazine, since that is a large portion of our money - is this a good/bad idea - I don't know, I can't see or quantify it, but it is expensive. But we still need turn around spending by GFA. The answer is definitely not to keep slugging the members and clubs.
