What margin would you suggest?

If we want to stay with inches, maybe 1/2 inc (1.27cm), if instead we are
prepared to make the big jump to metric, then I would suggest 1.50cm for top
& bottom, 2.5 for left and right margin.

Previously I had everything, including the margins, in metric, but Gary wants points for the paragraph spacing and indentation. So I changed those but left the margins in metric: 2.0 cm left, right, and top, and 1.5 cm bottom. I think 2.5 for left and right is wider than needed, but 1.5 for the top margin looks not enough to me.

Maybe just the "Copyright" heading?

Yes, that should be enough. We will need to create a new style for the other
OOoHeading2-like headings unless there is an easy way to exclude them from
the ToC.

The new paragraph style I created (OOoCopyright) is for that purpose. I'll just change the Copyright paragraph itself back to OOoHeading 2 (or perhaps even OOoHeading 1) and it will show up again in the ToC.

 4) Note (but that's not important) that we did not need to define a
OOoToCHead style as we could have used the facility of OOo to add a title
to the ToC with a user defined style (OOoHeading1 in this case).

I think I originally made it the way it is ... because
there was some problem with the ToC not always starting on a new page like
it should.

I think it is a very minor thing, I was just curious as to why the ToC title
was not used.

After writing my earlier note, I've done some testing and it appears that whatever the problem was (years ago) it's gone now, so changing to using the title within the ToC itself should be fine. I'll do that in the next iteration.

1) How do you insert a caption without the frame as it was done in the only
figure in the template document?

In a separate paragraph with its own style. OOoFigure is set up with a next style of OOoFigureCaption. To get the figure *number* you have to use Insert > Fields > Other > Variables and choose Figure. You can make an AutoText for that, or just copy-and-paste that part of an existing figure caption and (if necessary) press F9 on the pasted field to update it. It's actually very quick either way. I'll add instructions on this to the template.

2) Should OOoFigure be centred? it works fine as long as you place the
caption in a frame with the picture, if not it is very hard to align the
caption to the figure

Many figures will be full column width, so the question really relates to smaller figures and the captions for all figures. The only practical way to do it is to either have all figures and their captions left-aligned or all centred.

I've just done some testing on a typical chapter. All centred looks fine, though when captions are long enough to need a second line they sometimes look a bit odd... but acceptable IMO. Overall, in the few tests I've done the figures and captions look a bit better all-centred than left-aligned.

BTW, I just downloaded OOo2.4.1RC2 and OOo-dev_m17 to play around with.
