Hey Ben for faster particle rendering i would check out the recently uploaded 2.2.7 version to the trunk. There are a few additions, in particular a billboard class which has the same level of heirarchy as a face or segment in a mesh. Because there is less to calculate with a billboard in terms of matrix maths etc, things should run a bit faster. Currently you can have coloured billboards or bitmap billboards, we will try and add a pixel billboard soon for super-fast rendering of many pixels in a 3d space
