By 3dsmax instances I meant another thing. In 3dsmax when you make ctrl+v you have three clone options: Copy, Instance and Referance. If you choose an instance you save a disk space because instead of writing a copy of the mesh with all its faces and vertices into the file it only writes a note like "take mesh1 and place a copy of it to specified location". It can safe a lot of space when you have a lot of same objects on the scene. Prefab does not understand instances and references when importing model.
