Cherlene,
Because I have no pictures of my ancestors beyond my grandparents except one
of my maternal grandmother's father from Porto Judeu, Terceira, I began taking
pictures of the baptismal fonts and altars where an ancestor was baptized
and/or married.  The church may have been rebuilt; however, I was told that the
altars and fonts were saved and put back into the church.  I saw some of the
altar pieces in a church that was being redone in Terceira.  The workmen told
me that they try to save all the pieces and put them back together.
On the mainland, I found the church where my maternal grandfather's
great-grandfather was baptized in the 1700's.  The font looked old and
patched.  When I asked if it was the original, I was told, of course it was.
There was evidence that patches had been put on it with concrete and some of
the curves did not match so I believe it was the original.

One of the things that I would treasure are photos of the people on
the Islands still who are relatives and the photos of those who have
already passed.
