Cheri, your technique about asking what age the informant was at the time
and/or what was happening in the world has worked for me.

One thing I have had to do is not ASSUME anything.  My husband was born in East
Providence, RI.  His parents were both born there.  His grandparents immigrated
from the Azores to RI.

While I was interviewing his paternal aunt (the oldest of that family, now into
her 90's and knows none of the family) she was able to give me a lot of
information.  Again, she remembered how old she was and understood that
information was as good as remembering when someone was born or died.

Now, when she told me her grandfather died and how old she was, I was writing
the information down.  I spoke outloud and said he was buried in RI.  That is
where he lived.  She immediately said no, he is buried "here."  I said, "here
in RI" thinking she was remembering the event and he said, "No, he is buried
here in CA, at the same cemetery as my husband.  Boy was I surprised and she
told me he had been visiting one of his sons who lived in CA, he died, the son
buried him "here."  So much for thinking I knew what I was doing.

The same thing happened when she told me her granddaughter (born in CA) was
married.  Again, I spoke my thoughts and said she was married in CA.  No, I was
told, she was married in RI.  Upon further questioning, she told me her
granddaughter went on vacation to RI to visit family, met her man and married
him there, in RI.
