Not necessarily. My great-great-grandfather (who was a Shi'a-turned-Wahaabi from Iraq) was one of the first to bring Wahaabism to South India, and he was indeed a Hanafi. My mother's side of the family is completely comprised of Wahaabis following the Hanafi madhab. My great-grandfather also happened to be a high ranking Hanafi mujtahid. The only ultra-orthodox form of Islam in South India (mostly the states of Kerela and Karnataka) is Wahaabism, it's Deobandi in the rest of the country (including Hyderabad, the only major Muslim-majority city in India outside Kashmir). Deobandis are indeed Hanafis, while Wahaabis in India are both - Shafi and Hanafi. If I recall correctly, the official madhab in the UAE is Maliki, and lots of them are Wahaabis. Bear in mind that Deobandis and Wahaabis are less popular movements in India, when compared to other groups such as Barelvis, Shi'a, Dawoodi Bohras, Ismailis, etc. __________________________________________________ You are subscribed to Baha'i Studies as: mailto:[email protected] Unsubscribe: send a blank email to mailto:leave-534669-27401.54f46e81b66496c9909bcdc2f7987...@list.jccc.edu Subscribe: send subscribe bahai-st in the message body to [email protected] Or subscribe: http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/all_forums/subscribe?name=bahai-st Baha'i Studies is available through the following: Mail - mailto:[email protected] Web - http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/?forum=bahai-st News (on-campus only) - news://list.jccc.edu/bahai-st Old Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] New Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]
